I know better than to speak up - but . . .
Come on you guys, to make an interesting board you have to say something. 1300 people have viewed "Sharpening Techniques" and 13 people wrote something. I wrote I am going to the car show with my new lens, 15 views in a few hours - no responses. Say something like get a good shot of a Corvette or something about the lighting in the convention halls or take more than pictures of the girls ;)
To make this active and fun we have to communicate, give it a try! It's interesting and fun to come see what somebody wrote but boring when you know everyone is looking at the posts but no one is saying anything.
We can try the aurgueing approach but I hate that: the S1 is MUCH better than the D30 type thing. That always gets the steam flowing - ha ha.
So, the point - write . . .something.

Ok, ok, I'm awake...and I agree. Now can I go back to sleep?
ZZZzzzz...I can't sleep. So now that I'm up, I'll note that when Pekka announced his D30 gallery, there were 330 views and 1 comment. When someone else mentioned his gallery, there were 275 views and 4 comments. So if people aren't commenting on one of the best galleries around -- and especially on a gallery by the man who makes this forum possible -- then there's not much hope for conversation on any subject. And pity the poor person who comes in looking for a quick answer to a problem.
I was hoping this forum would prove a quiet backwater retreat from the hundreds of "Where do I buy a G2?" and "Hot pixel, what do I do?" questions on the DPReview Canon Forum. Instead, it's just a backwater with mostly lurkers and loafers. The few comments I read are higher caliber than I see in other forums, but there just aren't that many comments.
I used to look forward to seeing new messages here -- especially since the elegant layout of this forum is wonderful to look at and navigate (DPReview, with its "latest post first" means you have to hunt for your subject) -- but there's almost never anything new. I've been thinking of going away simply to avoid every morning's disappointment (the ultimate threat :-)
Now I'm starting to feel drowsy...

I think there is no need to read _any_ forum daily!
This forum feels slower because there are almost no flame wars. But all the stuff written is still there and new members are joining daily.
The fact that many don't write does not bother me - you can see how much messages are read and in my opinion that's as valuable. People will write when they have something constructive to say.
Fall is here and people get more sleepy, that's for sure - it's only natural.

I have learned so much on this forum and think it is great. It moves along at a better pace where I can keep up with it.
DPreview has tons of posts and tough to keep it with it. I like this layout much better where you can read all of the replies at once.
Also, the quality and tone of the participants here is very pleasing. Sometimes dpreviews gets much too serious.
Thanks for your wake up call to reply more. I will certainly try as I build up my skills to help out others as I have been helped.

As a pretty active member of this forum (What are the stats on rank by posts, Pekka?), I have to put my penny's worth in.
Unlike Pekka, I check in every day, and some days I must admit to being disappointed, like Don, that there have only been a couple of new posts, on subjects I'm not particularly interested in. But other times there's something really exciting, and I even get to blurt out a response, or two.
Pekka notes 2 important things: we get new subscribers every day, and we're nearly up to a thousand! Second, I think the read/response ratio is actually informative. If the thread is being read, but not responded to, then it's not controversial (which might be good), or the first responders got it right--and provided all the information required.
I'm often surprised that the Share Photos board is not more used, but personally, I know many of you visit my site occassionally enough that I don't need to jam it down your throats by posting images just to remind you that Im still out there making photos. I tend to think that I would only post interesting, novel, or amazing photos to the Share Photos board. I don't even remember ever posting to it, but maybe that's just a reflection of my personality.
I also enjoy those of you willing to post to the Critique board, since that's always a "pull your pants down" experience.
In general, I like the more gentle feeling of this forum--dpreview is just too hectic most times--and I certainly think that nearly ALL the great web-active photographers using G1/G2/Pro-90/D30 are on this forum. It's a pleasure to be amongst such company...
cheers,

Whenever I want to take a break from work (often), I click over to this forum to see if there's anything new, so my hopes are unreasonably high.
What I like about Pekka's forums...
1. They're attractive -- I like the layout and the colors and the fact I can resize my window to read at any width I want. Visually, they're very relaxing and put me in the mood to read or communicate.
2. Whether I return daily or monthly, I can always find the message headers I'm looking for (a side benefit of not having hundreds of messages, I'm sure).
3. The email feature that notifies you when someone has replied.
4. The high caliber of posts -- the "white specks" and "pricing madness" posts of other forums are thankfully missing.
5. The ability to go back later and edit or delete your message.
6. Emoticons -- ok, not really, because I've never used them, but they amuse me when I see them in other posts.
If there are 1000 members and 300 visit Pekka's forum in response to a Gallery notice, that's amazing.
So, despite agreeing that more participation would be good, this is the last forum I would abandon and I'm leaving my dog (http://www.kleptography.com/misc-seeingeyedog6388.htm) here to protect it.
