Here is an illustration of Zone principles. This white rose and background metered at 1/500, f/5.6 in P mode, and that's what my Sekonic got with a grey card. I don't have a spot meter, but the spot setting in the G1 can help. Using that, I found that the white rose metered at 1/1000, f/8. If they grey card reading is on Zone V, then the white rose is on Zone VII. However, the spot reading with the G1 included shadow as well as highlights (the rose filled the square) so I decided I needed one more stop for the highlights. This would have placed Zone VII at 1/1000, f/11. Backing off two stops yields 1/500, f/8. My customary compensation of -1/3 makes the highlights on the white about as much as the G1 can handle. Here are the results:

Hi Del,

How do you think your picture will turn out if you use a lens opening of say, 2 to 2.5 (blurring the background) and with a fast shutter speed (1/500 to 1/800) and macro mode turn on. Try this with both flash on and off.

Boshala,

thanks for the suggestions. In this case, I was interested in the texture of the sundial base in the background, so it is slightly off focus, but not fully blurred. As for flash, I recognize its uses for fill, but was merely illustrating the use of zone principles. I might try the flash, to see which is better -- zone-type exposure or fill flash to accomplish a similar exposure range.
