First, I wasnt sure if most people feel the same about the actual definition of "chimping"... Secondly, how many people actually use the term? :o Guilty here... Just curious... Plus if any of you "Cream o' the Crop" want to maybe expand the Wiki entry so it appropriately represents us, feel free. Just curious....

Based on the Wikipedia definition of chimping, I am happy to report that I am absolutely NOT a chimper.

I do it and use the term all the time. The only thing missing from that wiki is:

4. A term used by those who are too good for it to describe the actions of "wannabe" photographers.

Same here about not doing it. I only even check the display if the shot was in any way unusual and may have caused unexpected results. I certainly don't oh and ah over the little LCD images though.

I don't even ever recall seeing someone doing something that could be considered chimping as I don't see looking at the display qualifies unless it comes with the associated extroverted excitement. I wonder if chimping is more a phrase of the moment than something that people really, commonly do.

I'm still not clear on one question:

Is checking the histogram considered chimping? If so, I'm a chimper. Otherwise, I learned almost immediately that the image in the LCD is absolutely no indication of the quality of the actual image, and is of value only for checking composition.

Ok citizenship... I will add your addition to the definition

I often check both, the main reason I like to check the image is to see if how my focus is on questionable photos. Also, it's saved my butt a coule of times when I have left the ISO too high or low from a previous shoot.

I still forget I have one of these con-sarned high-falutin' gizmos with the fancy TV on the back. I'll shoot a few (usually many) shots and suddenly realize "oh... wait... I don't have to wait to see how these turn out." Then during a pause in the action I'll quickly flip through the shots. I seldom really look at them until I get home, except sometimes I go into full chimp mode and gather my tribe around to jump around and beat sticks on the ground at how wonderful (or goofy) a shot turned out.

I chimp.

Evidently, there are those who take great issue with the practice.

I don't care...

Not chimping would be like having a nice lens and never useing it.

Its no gooding having tools that can help you take better photos if you don't use them.

This has been discussed before and the term is a horrible phrase, really idiotic. Please refrain from using it.

haha.. I didn't think you would really use that, though it's not far from the truth. ;)

I always check the histogram. If that's chimping then so be it. And I'm not ashamed either to admit that I'm a wannabe photographer. :)

Very seldom check after each photo, usually only check on downloading, however there are exceptions, occasionally if I believe what I have captured on camera to be a "one of" then I will check immediately, if I'm not happy then hopefully I can retake the subject matter:cool:

I think "verifying the histogram" sounds way too pretentious. The term "chimping" works. As for the rest of you poseurs....

I do it just to see how badly I messed up a shot, and at that I rarely check after every shot. I almost never show them on-camera to anyone else.
Anyway, I have "wannabe photographer" in my signature, I have nothing to hide:p

This is why I have never liked Wiki's. Every post is subjective to ones personal definition.
I would rather read a blog with one slant than many.
just my 2 cents

LOL!

It seems like the definitions vary. Based on those videos, I rarely chimp... I look at my images for blown highlights, to double check my ISO and see the histogram balance in case I have to take another shot before moving on.
I don't make monkey noises, dance and point at the camera when I find a good one though. I save that for in front of the computer.

But seriously... anybody that says they don't chimp are closet chimpers.

Originally, I thought chimping meant taking a "sample" image to use as a measurement or control picture so you know how to adjust for the next picture... which should be the good one.
I guess I was wrong.

My wife is a crazy chimper!! My family usually chimp for me. They'll say "Eww, I bet that was a good one. Did you get it? Let me see. Oh, that's so good! Hey John, check this one out."

- just give me my darn camera back and wipe your sweaty paw prints off the lcd!!
