I volunteer for Doris Banham Dog Rescue (http://www.dogsos.co.uk) in the UK. We rescue dogs from needless destruction after they have served their statutory 7 days in the pound. As part of my fundraising efforts I've put together a book using Blurb with 100% of the profits going to the rescue. The book is called HEAVEN CAN WAIT. (http://www.blurb.com/books/1512313) and features photos that I have taken of some of our rescue dogs along with some doggy poems and quotations and also a couple of letters from adoptees. I'm happy overall with how the book came out. The overall quality, as well as the image quality is pretty good. I'm just wondering, has anyone else had experience of self-publishing and if so, who with? As I said, I did this purely to raise money for the rescue but the books are SO expensive. To make a mere £5 per book, I have had to price them at £19.95. Blurb take the rest. I've only sold about 15 in 6 months :( I made another one also to raise money for the rescue but this one a more general dog book using images I have taken over the last few years of my own clients. This one is called FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS (http://www.blurb.com/books/1531481) and is even more expensive because its bigger and has only sold around 8. Has anyone here used a self-publisher that is more reasonably priced?

Thanks for your time :)

I haven't used a self-publisher, but I'd like to applaud your efforts on behalf of helpless pups. I work with Friends for Animals to help get dogs rescued from the pound. Good luck and keep at it. I'm sure someone here will be able to provide you with some options.

Have you considered approaching a local printing company? They may be able to give you a more competitive price for short production runs? (and may help subsidise in return for having their details on or in the book?).

Well done with the efforts by the way! Good luck with any future projects!

Thank you gibbit1 and JuzzyD. Good idea about contacting local printers. I will definitely look into that
