I'm noticing a lot of people having problems with various aspects of their 10D's. I'm wondering if there is any pattern to make out of any of it? Are problems truely limited to certain serial number ranges or lense combinations?

I was considering setting up a web site that would allow people to enter their camera serial number and a survey about it and various functions. If the right data was collected, we could draw some statistics and maybe some interesting patterns from it?

I am a database & sftwr developer, so I think about this kind of stuff. It wouldn't be too hard to set it up and I could host it on my site. If I made the data entry process as quick and painless as possible, we could hopefully gather the data from a very large number of 10D owners. Spread it around on some web forums and such and there could eventually be 1000's of responses. If we got that many, and a clear problem was shown from the data, it could also be a piece of evidence to modivate Canon to make firmware fixes and/or add new features to future cameras in this price point. (20D anyone? :) )

The data would be made available on several stat pages and maybe even some query functions built in to sort the data. Then we could all keep an eye on the stats as the data is collected and see what comes out of it.

Firstly, is there already such a place on the net to gather this data? (No need to re-invent the wheel), and second, what data should be collected on this project?

Going for simplicity and ease of entry, I was thinking the following for a start:

1. Cam serial number
2. Country of purchase
3. Various questions relating to the user's phto experience and background.
4. Various questions about each of several "suspected problems" such as front focus problem, over exposure problem, and so on. (Would need some help drumming this list up).
5. A place to paste EXIF data from an image that displayed the suspected problem.
6. Lense used (and possibly some lense data) for images exhibiting problems.
7. A general feedback survey pertaining to satisfaction with various features and functions.
8. An area to add suggestions for firmware fixes and features for future models.

This does get complicated though. The survey is only as valid as the data collected. There are a lot of people who have not picked up a camera since 1965 buying this camera who's problems are clearly attributed to not understaning the featuers on a modern SLR, as well as the people who have only used a $20 film point and shoot who think the camera is junk because they are not getting "snapshots" out of it. This would need to be taken into account and I'm not sure how to do that.

Anyway, I'll give it some thought and please share your feedback on this.
