View Full Version : Battery Grip, Yes Please!

So, I just picked up a battery grip for my Digital Rebel, and dang, I don't know how I used the camera before without it!
Even if I didn't want the extra battery life, I'd want it just because it's so comfortable to hold normally now! If you have big hands, it makes the camera more comfortable obviously when holding it verticall, but way more comfortable when holding it horizontally as well, because it extends the grip down on the side.
Highly recommended!!

The grip is pretty much a love it or hate it thing. I love my BG-E2 for my 20D - I wouldn't want to be without it.
Using my 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lenses, the extra size and weight makes the camera handle better. The grip gives me an anchor for the E1 hand strap (recommended if you have a grip). It's easier to change batteries when my camera is in my bag using the grip - which reminds me to put the battery I've been using on charge and put my spare in the grip. There is the AA battery magazine, but I can't see me using that any time outside an emergency. Finally, you've got the obvious features of a portrait hand grip, shutter button, control dial and "thumb buttons".

I've posted this numerous places on here, and I'll say it again. (as I've said before). Energizer makes AA battery packs that are rechargeable, and they're 2500mAh EACH. Gives you 5-6 times as much power as two standard batteries. I just last week changed the batteries in my xt after using it for a month, very regularly!!
If interested, they're silver(obviously) with lime green decals and stripes on them. Comes with a charger. 8 batteries for $20 US or so. Should be able to find them several places.

The grip makes the camera more comfortable =) I like my grip, but don't really like how low the viewfinder is. It feels like I"m reaching towards the sky while shooting in portrait haha. Sorta weird angle with the wrist too. Hm.

How do you guys deal with the neck strap getting in the way while shooting portrait?

Most of the time I have the neck strap wrapped tighly around my hand as a hand strap with just enough slack so I can switch to portrait... keeps it out of the way and gives me a better grip to boot.
I love my grip - wont own another consumer (or prosumer) level camera without one.

I'm actually thinking about getting one now! Everyone seems to love it. I'll call ritz or something to see if they'll let me try it on before I buy it. Only problem is that my XT's silver :o That's bound to be an interesting sight. Silver camera, Black grip

I hear your concerns. I had the same concern, because my Rebel is silver, and the grip is black. It looks just a little bit off, but honestly, it's not bad at all. Besides, it feels so much better that I just don't care, haha :p
Here's a pic, just incase you wanted to check it out:

I dont take the grip off my 300D, it makes it so much easier nadling.
I dont see a problem with a silver body and black grip, its hardly a vanity item.

thats funny, just took mine off and I LOVE it . So small and compact! I hate that big camera (20 D) And when I flip verticle its the way I used to do it when I had a rebel. I could nver get used to flipping it eye piece down not up! I think I am going ot sell it!

It's entirely down to the lenses you use, I think. OceanRider's EF-S 17-85mm IS and EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 are rather less bulky than my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. The 24-70 is about 900g, the 70-200 is about 1.35kg. Both have hoods on them.
As I said in another thread, if I'm ever tempted by a 'nifty fifty' or similar small lens, I may well try the camera gripless. With the two L zooms, I wouldn't want to be without the grip.

This is REALLY helpful to me. THANK YOU! Just got the 20D w/BG-E2 battery grip...and I'm baffled by the instruction sheet that Canon sends w/the grip: Says to expect 1400 shots (50% flash) in warm weather w/the 511-A battery (isn't clear if they mean 1 or 2 batteries). BUT then they expect 60 shots (same conditions) with 6 AA alkalines. NO MENTION OF NIHM batteries!
I've ben using NIHM batteries for maybe 3 years in EVERYTHING...flashlights, cameras, radios, players...What did we ever do w/o them? Spent a LOT of SSS on batteries, that's what!
Thanks for the knowledge, Ronald S. Jr.

brownie, hows the battery life with NiMh's I just bought a bunch of them 2300's for my flash and other doodads I will see for myself some time in october when the bg gets here but just currious. I've also got about 4 6 cell sub-c packs and a 15minute quick charger that plugs into 12 volts or 110 volts either cig lighter or directly to the battery terminals via aligator clamps, those things rewired or hooked to a simple transistor reg would do a number on a remote belt pack.

My grip stays on my 300D 24/7.
Just for fun, I took it off last week, and the camera felt so far less substantial, it made me wonder why I bought the camera in the first place.
I'm thinking about upgrading to the 20D and, when I do, I will also be getting the grip for it.
All hail the grip!

Grip with handstrap is one of the best and cheapest buys you can get for a camera. On a 350D it improves handling 100% in my estimation. Also, the design of the camera is such that a black grip and silver body do work very well. I had that combo on my ex 300D.

I have the grip with the handstratp and absolutely love it. Changed the handling of the camera completely. Balances better with my lenses. I do have the energizer rechargeables and do like them. I just wonder why the grip does not report the charge in these batteries like it does with the regular Canon batteries.

for those of you in the UK looking at one of the 300d Grips ( BG-E1) goto www.ebuyer.com as you can pick it up there for £49.99 + VAT and P&P ( which comes to about £63 ) Better then the RRP of £150 that all the other places sell it for huh !!!

Just got the grip for my 20D. Wasn't planning to get it but saw a mint used one for cheap so I picked it up anyway.
The camera now feels really comfy with the Sigma 24-70 and the grip. I'm using the handstrap that I bought on eBay with the neck strap and they work great.

Also just got the grip for the 20D. What a difference especially on the big Zooms. I'll never take it off.

They sell 2200mAh rechargeables Ni-MH at walmart. I bought the 4 pack with charger for like $14. They are "digital" brand.

Wow! That's a pretty kool shot!
No one around here carries the grip!! I think I'll just have to order it from B&H, so if I don't like it I can send it back... but I doubt that will be the case
