All shot with Canon 5DMk2 and Sigma 105mm macro. Studio lights and black perspex sheet for reflections. All processed using Silver Efex Pro in CS5.

I think it's just the use of studio flash lighting. And, of course, the simplicity of the subject matter. Less is more? ;)
