View Full Version : Should Avatar also be moderated?

I may go in flame for this thread but let's ask anyway: don't you think that avatars should also be moderated?
I mean we see more and more very bad tastes and provocative avatars such as a Star Wars character making obscene gestures, a face with blank eyes, etc..
In addition from being ugly, those avatars are disturbing especially when they are flash avatars moving.
Some provocation may be fun but to see the same provocative avatar on each single post from the same individual for weeks becomes really annoying.
I realize that tastes are subjective. However, I am sure there may easily be common views among moderators about which avatars crosses the line of real bad taste.
Let me know what you think.

I ceretainly wouldn't agree with nudity or obscene gestures and I'd be sure to contact a mod if I saw an avatar like that. A face with blank eyes seems like an expression of art, simply judging from that simple description. That one sounds like it has a place here.
I'd contact a mod if I found a truly offensive avatar. But it really is up to Pekka.

I agree to a certain extent. They should be moderated, but not to the point where we'll have a comunist forum :D

I will concede that some avatars do push the limits of good taste, and we have 'moderated' avatars in the past. I'm think of a couple that were eliminated because they were blatantly political. Obscenity would certainly be another reason.
If there's something you find offensive, notify a moderator, and we'll look at it.

I must be blind, I haven't seen an offensive avatar.

Its probably this avatar Lord Jim refers to as being obscene.

My comment was a general comment.
However, yes I was also referring to the one linked in your message that I find almost rude for the readers (could be fun the first time but it is becoming annoying after weeks).
I was also referring to the attached:

I have nothing against the above members that I do not even know. Some of their posts may even be interesting but I just find the avatars inappropriate.
I am glad to learn from the mods that there is also some moderation of the avatars.
The above being said, this forum remains the best in its class (from far).

I see a dancing stormtrooper. I think if you see a stormtropper mocking a sexual act and you tihnk that an avatar of such is inappropriate on an internet web forum, I respectfully disagree that it's offensive.
Second avatar I do not find offensive at all. This website has naked people on it. I think a pair of arty looking ayes and a possbily raunchy or dancing stormtrooper are nothing to worry about.

So it's come to this.

I think the best approach is that if you see an avatar that should not be used, report the post with a note that the problem is the avatar. We will then discuss it in moderator chatroom and decide if further actions are needed.
What I would like to ask, though, is that animated avatars are not used. They distract from reading the messages.

I think this thread may say more about you than you think sir.

Sounds like the right approach especially for the animated avatars. Thanks

I'm sorry.
Animated avatars might not be a good idea for other reasons but a distraction from reading the message ? Hmmm! Not.

Let's agree to disagree and if animated avatars are also not a good idea for other reasons, then let's get rid of them.

I agree that avatars should be moderated (or at least reported to the moderators for further review) if you find them offensive. Not necessarily the ones referred to in this thread, but there have certainly been a few that caught my eye as being pretty tasteless.
For the record I have no problem with tasteful or artisitc nudity, but even some of the work posted in the Glamour & Nude section of this forum I find offensive. Some of what I have seen on that forum is pure junk- borderline porn, IMHO. As a result, I simply don't read the posts in that forum anymore.
The problem with offensive avatars is that there IS no way to avoid them and thus, they deserve some attention from both members and moderators as to their potential to cause offence.
All of that said, I havent seen any avatars that I think are WAY out of line, which I think says something for the members of this community. Just my $.02 :)

I meant because of bandwidth, nothing more.
This is my last comment on this ridiculous subject.
Obviously you have little regard or respect for the mods of this forum.

Maybe there should be a section for "Consenting Adults" where avatars are unrestricted and all the porn can be posted. I agree to moderate!:p
