I learned about Firefox and Thunderbird through this forum, so I figured maybe some of ya'll might know something about the OpenOffice Suite (http://www.openoffice.org/). It's a free, open source, productivity suite (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, etc.). Has anbody used it? Any thoughts?

It was touted to me as being as good as MS Office, but free.

It was free.

I use NeoOffice/J, which is a native application for the Mac that was directly ported from OpenOffice. I like it.

I have had a few issues with pages from Microsoft Word that do not lay out the same in NeoOffice/J Writer, but for the most part, everything works very well.

The best part about it, of course, is the price. FREE. :)

I have it on my home pc. Since upgrading my base unit in May I have consciously avoided MS bloatware where possible - hence Mozilla. I use openoffice 2.0 beta with no problems whatsoever. All my work stuff is MS Office 2000 and it is completely compatible to and from OO. Have to say I have used mainly the word equivalent. Not quite the slick-looking MS interface but very good nonetheless and fast too.

It's good software. However, if you intend on using it and sending files to Microsoft based people, be sure to set default file types as microsoft types. I believe when you install it the software defaults to its own proprietary format.

I have not generated any specific OO files yet but whenever I re-save a MS office file I have altered, it gives me the option on file type.

I've been using OOo for years and I find it wonderful. It's not fully compatible with MSOffice: macros and internal Basics are totally different, but if you do not use such "advanced" features you can easily swap files between the two suites. In my opinion OOo is easier to use than MSOffice and it is absolutely much more stable. Just my $0.02!

I recently came across a rather inexpensive office suite called ThinkFree Office. It is available for both PC and Mac. It works very well and is quite fast. It is fully compatible, as far as I have found, with Microsoft Office documents.
