it was the womens turn today and i think they are a bit better than the men. like i said, i don't know much about rugby but i'm pretty sure 74-0 isn't a good score. i wasn't as pleased with these shots as the other day. i think the sun being a couple hours higher in the sky is what the difference was. with white jerseys on one side and black on the other i lost a lot of shots to blow outs in order to try and get any detail in the dark ones.
this was a big collision, 8 was down for a good bit before shaking it off...

i still haven't got the hang of getting exposure outside bang on so it was aperature priority again today. some day my quality will be that of the real pros here but not quite yet.

Another quality rugby selection... #5 is particularly peachy. As a viewer, I feel right there in amongst the action... just how it should be!

74-0 is about the worst thrashing you could get!
Would like to see some shots in the rucks
= when the ball is on the ground and everyone is on top of it. Your not allowed to use hands so you have to dig it out with your boots (rucking) hence why alot of the front row wear head gear.

i think outdoor sports is much the same as wildlife phpotography in terms of lighting. What i tend to do is use the manual exposure mode and take a few test shots until you find a happy medium between blowing the whites and losing detail in the dark colours.Alternatively use an external flash, expose for the highlights and use the flash to fill the shadows.

thanks guys...
@photocam, i will definately try to get some shots in the ruck next match. i tried this last match as the women semed more vicious in going for the ball with their boots but none of them offered anything exciting.
@stewert, i thank you for the idea but i don't own/use flash. sir gavin has sorted me on how to handle the nasty high sun so i will give his idea a try. in the last photo it is sort of what is going on there with shooting into the sun but exposing for the player in the shadow. we'll see how it goes next match.

Great shots. Looks like a lot of fun. I am assuming that the 70 was your team? Thanks so much for sharing.

thanx...yeah the 70 or whatever it ended up being, i honestly don't really recall, was the team i was shooting for. all i got were shots of purple/black jerseys running over, through, and around the white jerseys. it was evident from the get go that one side was far superior.
gallery is up and can be seen here, but to be honest there isn't a whole lot to see. the decent ones are already posted here.

WONDERFUL! What's the scoop on those black helmet looking things? I love to see their eyes looking at the ball or each other! Super.

Usually worn by the front row players as they spend alot of time on the ground near feet (which are contained in rugby boots with sprigs) and other front rowers.

The funny thing is I'm kinda anti rugby because NZ is obsessed with it.
Theres also some pretty serious political history surrounding it too.

Sounds like they need face plates, too. :-)
