Great Stealth Bag Idea!

I have been searching everywhere for the perfect stealth canvas bag. Loved the Crumplers but longed for a zipper and something for MUCH less cost. I wanted that worn canvas look, soft yet sturdy, so I decided to go to my local Army/Navy store and WOW... Plenty of opportunities for awesome bags. Inexpensive too!

Found this insert on Amazon for $28. It's called the DSLR Paddy by BB Bags; The zippered heavy canvas bag from the army/navy store cost about about $20. It was a perfect fit. Holds 7d with 50mm on, and room for at least 3 more lenses. Big outside zippered pockets hold flash and misc gear. Side pockets for phone, wallet and keys too!

So, for about 1/3 the price of a Crumpler or similar, I have something really soft, very protective and comfortable to wear. No logos, total stealth. Very happy! It also has a slit pocket on the reverse that will carry my Ipad. The whole thing together is about the size of the 7 Million. Maybe even a bit smaller.

Nice. How are you managing with the insert lid inside your bag? The insert with the lid I tried got annoying really fast, so I switched to inserts from Tenba (Wedding insert) and Camaroo.

insert lid doesn't really bother me. In fact I kind of like it as it adds extra protection. Plus, I can leave it unzipped, put the bag flap down and have easy quick access but still a great bit of padding.

now this is a good thread, I just ordered the insert to put in one of my older bags that I have laying around in my closet, thanks for the idea. I've been meaning to get a good carry around bag and this just fixed that problem for almost nothing....

Black version, 4th on over that says "color: olive" is the same bag in olive that most of us have been getting from the same source (gravity trading)

This pad is something that a lot of people might want to get even for their other bags. There has a been a lot of discussion in this thread about bags getting heavy and this seems to be a well used solution that a lot of people like. Just think about the fact that it's a certified product for postal works, it's got to carry some weight (pun intended)...

If you want to waterproof it, I took a can of paste wax to a canvas bag and rubbed it into the bag. Then I took a heat gun and melted it in. It became totally waterproof. It stunk for a couple of days but it didn't change the look of the bag.

canvas is extremely easy to waterproof. and it's always a smart idea to have a water barrier around your camera.

I've found that people will spill drinks towards your camera gear at any given opportunity, lol.

To waterproof why not just put the inner in a bin bag before putting it in the canvas bag. You won't even see it sandwiched between the two. If it really starts to chuck it down I'm sure there will be enough slack to just pull it over the top of the insert.....

I've done this with multiple bags from old laptop bags to canvas bags from Target. I love doing it but my most recent exchange message is the the best for my gear till I get another lens back.

I agree with this, I've been trying to find a bag similar to that one and can't seem to find one like it. I can't seem to find one that looks good like that one and has a zipper across the top of it.

If you could let us know the brand and model of it it would be great.

the bag that you have is the jack bauer bag. i want one too. with the insert, its a pretty sweet camera bag.

The Jack bauer bag does not have a zipper across the top. I did see that bag as well and it will be what I will try if he doesn't get back to us with the actual bag name/model number.

yep, the one that is in the TV show is a rothco bag and it does not have the zipper across the top like this bag. It looks almost the same but it's just a little different.

I love these threads about making custom bags. I've bought a few expensive photography bags and thinking of selling them to make a few custom bags for much cheaper price.

On a similar note, is there a good camera insert for a backpack? Most of what I've seen are for the traditional shoulder bag.

I love these threads about making custom bags. I've bought a few expensive photography bags and thinking of selling them to make a few custom bags for much cheaper price.

I do a lot of shooting at motocross events, and since it is dusty everywhere, a canvas bag would be much nicer than having to clean an expensive bag everytime I go out. And if it ever gets trashed, buy another one for $20!

So I went to the site and looked and sure enough, it says that the main compartment is zippered. I hope the OP chimes in soon and lets us know if this looks to be the same one as his. Hi Guys- OP here. It's a "Rapid Dominance R31 Classic Military Messenger". Comes in green and black. The only difference is that I also bought another bag and took the strap pad off it. Otherwise this is the bag.

FYI, mine does have the red tag. It's on the side of the bag. Must be a different year. This DOES have the large velcro flap with the full zippered compartment underneath.

Trust me, you will not be disappointed! Rapid Dominance ROCKS!

Heh, exactly, at that point it's pretty much a crap shoot on what bag you got. But when I'm walking out in touristy areas, I really notice photography bags much more than a typical non-labeled bag. The worst offenders IMHO are Lowepro and Tamrac bags, I could see those from a far distance and just know it's filled with glass.

I do like this idea, but even with my dedicated photo bags, I usually debag them or pick ones that don't look too photo like the Thinktank Retrospective. I would like to create some photo bags from my messenger bags and other backpacks I have around the house.

well I got screwed, they sent me a damn Rothco brand bag which doesn't have a zipper on it...........

So I've had to file a claim on amazon that they are shipping a different brand than what is actually advertised. I hope I don't have to deal with any BS just to get my money back on this ****. I'm a little pissed off right now about this as I was waiting for this all week.

Going to make a custom insert with foam, velcro and ripstop nylon. Watch this space :)

On another note for those that are looking at bags which state "Inside Zipper Pouch" I think this is referring to a small pocket inside the main compartment which has a zip and not the main compartment itself. In all of my searching the rapid dominance bag the OP used was the only one I could find with a zipped main compartment. In addition to this I couldnt find it in the UK so had to order it off the US amazon site. Hopefully they send me the bag I ordered and not the Rothco bag!

Just noticed that link I put takes you to the armyuniverse page on amazon but I clicked the gravity trading option and bought it from them instead (as the shipping to the UK was less). The proper rapid dominance showed up today, what a nice bag... I think this is going to be my regular bag from now on.... I put the insert in there and there is still pent of room so I can fit some stuff on the side of the insert as well without any worries.

I have a 430exII, 18-55 kit lens, 70-300, 50mm f/1.4 Sekonic light meter and a whole bunch of other stuff in the bag and there is plenty of room/

On the inside there is a zippered compartment on the side that I am using to store batteries right now. the front 2 pockets are holding various wires and my Cactus V4 receivers and trigger. I also have some plenty of room in this bag for all my stuff.

I can even fit the 70-300 with camera attached and I also have a battery grip on my camera, it all fits without issue at all.

Loving the fact that I will be able to walk around with this and not be screaming out.... "Hey, I have expensive stuff!!!" and all for less than half the price it should have cost.

I think that will be the jack bauer / rothco bag. Very similar but no main zip and differences in the way the pockets close etc. I think its only the rapid dominance bag that has the zipped main compartment so it would have to say rapid dominance somewhere on the listing. I may be wrong though

your wording sounded sarcastic when reading it but anyway.

I just can't foresee this as a viable choice, it's not like those lunch boxes are all that big, you will only be able to carry pretty much a very very limited kit.

This route is purely for those that want to walk around with their normal gear in a more inconspicuous way while in route to the places that they plan to use the equipment.

^^^ That's a pretty nice looking bag in general. I like that elastic on the bottom there as well as the front area for holding stuff. Map window is pretty slick as well. It is missing a few things that I would much more prefer but it does have a rather nice design and style to it. I would love it if more companies would take this line of thinking and implement it into more CAMERA bags instead of just regular bags.

Not bad at all. I was out walking around today at a local park to find spots to shoot in as I was waling around I found a spot I liked and took a couple snaps real quick. In the process another guy that was out there with his very noticeable camera bag came over to me and started asking me questions about mine. I kind of laughed when he told me paid 200 for his bag when I was replying that mine only cost me about 50 bucks total.

But then we had a nice long conversation about it all and shot the **** for a few. Dude was cool and was wanting some help on some things coming up so he took my number and hopefully I will get some nice side jobs working with him at the events he shoots.

To KEEP it on the shoulder, as in not slip off? It's worn sling style, across the chest so there's no slippage. But to cushion heavy loads, I make my own strap pads when needed.

If you're really into DIY then you can buy a sleeping pad for less than $10 at Wal-Mart, the Army-Navy store, or any sporting goods store. They are generally blue, made of closed cell foam, and are about 5/8" thick. You can cut them in any shape and glue them together or you can cover them with nylon and make them to look like the purchased pads. The foam is soft and will gouge eventually but really will last a long time. I have never used it for camera padding but have lined shelves in trucks to transport and protect test equipment.

Thanks! It's roughly 15"x11"x5" but of course the center can bow out to be much deeper since it's a soft bag.

I normally only add D-rings when I/the customer may want to use the bag without any sort of shoulder strap. With a messenger bag, the whole point is to have a shoulder strap so you wouldn't want to take it off. Now if you want to be able to switch straps, that isn't really necessary. Most straps are basically the same (2" webbing), where they differ is the pad (if you want a pad, that is). I can make any kind of pad you want, which would just attach to the existing webbing strap. However, since all of my stuff is custom, I do whatever the customer wants :)

also, I think the 7D is a bit bulkier than a T2i and with it being gripped, makes it more bulkier... I'm considering of getting rid of the grip, but I got so used to the grip that it'll feel weird... there's also a lot of pros and cons without the grip (smaller, lighter, cheaper rrs L plate, etc.)

This book fits in the bag, but outside of the insert, perfect. Laying on its side, it is exactly the same height as the insert. I do not have a macbook and I do not know the exact dimensions, but if it is the same height and length as this book, it will fit perfect. You have maybe 3 inches of depth for the laptop as well.

Helps a little but are you saying that book is snug in that position? Laying on its binder that book's width looks several inches shorter than the width of the bag. The Macbook is about 14.5 inches wide by 10 inches tall.

you can go directly to the gravity trading website or even the original manufacturers website to get the bag. There are several links on pages 1,2 and 3 for all the above. Rapid dominance is the company, gravity trading may still offer the bag directly on their website but you can definitely get it directly from rapid dominance.

Depending on the size of the bag you pick, and the insert you put in it, they are. I have a couple different Timbuk2 bags, and a couple different inserts, and just re-arrange and re-configure as needed for where I'm going and what I'm taking. I have the Tenba insert (which came with the Tenba Messenger (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=12179559#post12179559)), but it is definitely lacking. I decided the Domke insert (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=5195780&postcount=11) wouldn't cut it, but this Camera Paddy might just be the ticket :D
I'd use it either in the Tenba or if I want to go stealth, in my daily messenger.

lol, you will have to call them. that's actually the exact same bag in both of those photos, well they are actually using the exact same photo, just one has the blue bottle taken out of the image. If you compare the images to the ones on the Rapid Dominance site you will see that it actually their exact image with the blue bottle missing from the shot in the one image. You will have to call them for clarification to ensure that you are getting the right product.

Once you call them report back as to the results of the info that you get.

I think there are 2 version of the bag... one with a zippered main compartment, and one without... there was one here who posted that he ordered it through amazon.com (via army trading seller) and he ended up the one without the zipper.... someone also mentioned that if you order it through amazon.com (via gravity trading) that you will get the one with the zipper..... i did just that and indeed I got the one with the zipper.... currently, on amazon, gravity trading is no longer an option....

Ok, so I ended up cancelling my order for the insert, and purchasing tagakweens setup. So that means I won't be making the call and clarifying which bag is which, unless someone else wants to know and for some reason can't make the call.

I don't think any past pictures or SKU#s or anything is going to be reliable at this point. Looking at tagakweens bag, it doesn't have the red tag on the front of the bag.

no, they have since moved the red tad to the side of the bag. But originally the tag on was on the lid.

Mine has it on the left side under on the mounting point for the attachment of the strap. Also when the flap is flipped back there is a rapid dominance tag where you can write your name if you feel the need.

The quality is tops - I also own their suits, jeans, jacket.... a great brand, although I'm not so sure if it has hit the global market yet... :-/

Both the rothco and rapid have inner zippered pockets but only the rapid dominance has a zipped main compartment. I bought through gravity on amazon and got the zippered rapid dominance
