Examples of what I'm describing - please bear with me!

OK, they say a picture is worth a thousand words..... so me trying to describe what I saw is gonna be tricky! I'm after someone pointing me to examples of this style so I can examine it properly and create my own....

A short while ago I had to visit a school and noticed some excellent pictures of the students on the walls. I won't be going back to this school as it was a good distance away. Right here goes:

They were professional photos taken in a studio with decent lighting on a white infinity backdrop and white floor to make the students the only subject
Each scene was a small group of students either reading or playing instruments - posed but animated.
The prints were approx 36 x 24" and had 3 or 4 different scenes each simply bordered by a thin black line that had a break in at 1 or 2 points with a hand or foot sticking out of it to give the feeling of depth.

Damn it is hard to describe! I can vaguely see it in my mind and would love to be able to study it. Best idea I've seen for a long time.

Are you referring to an "out of the box" PS treatment?

Not quite - nowhere near that 3D.... I knew this would be hard. Let me try and refine - When I think of a collage, I think of loads of cutouts stuck on a piece of paper being crammed in next to eachother overlapping. This was what I'd describe as an "open" collage with plenty of space between the scenes.....

Right, pen to paper for a rubbish sketch to see if that can direct people!

Right, excuse my crap drawing - also this is just my recollection of the picture - It really was much better than this although the concept is there.....

I'm not sure what help you're needing though, how is this not just three pictures placed on one canvas, and some border lines added and broken at strategic places? Seems pretty easy to make, when you've got the white background behind it all.

Sure - The diagram above is about as good as the concept gets in my head. So if I were to reproduce that it would be ok.... just ok.

What I was hoping for is for someone to say "Yeah I know who does stuff like that, this is the website" etc. I could then study the top notch version of it and base my version on that..... see?

When you say hand or foot sticking out of it to give the feeling of depth, did you mean that there was a piece of paper actually sticking out? Like a calender with a sticky note on it.

I have no clue, but I like challenges.

When I say a hand or foot sticking out, I just mean breaking the border.... still 2D.

I think I understand what you mean, but I can't tell you the name of this effect. If you're trying to achieve this, I'd go with the white background/floor as well - then in Photoshop cut out around the subject's "umbrella" or "top of head" and then add the border how you want it (putting a line over the middle of the object you want to stick out) on a new layer so you can erase the line that went over "umbrella" or "top of head"
Kind of difficult to explain.......I didn't read your original post, haha, so if I'm totally off, forgive me!!

Cheers Jennfar. I will be doing this as you say.... I have the basic concept in my head, was just hoping to see a pros version so I can copy really!
