Is there a way to protect the screen?

The simplest way is to get some of the protective film that used for PDAs like Palm and Pocket PC's.

It does slightly affect the clarity of the image, but otherwise the only problem is cutting the sheet to correct size and getting it aligned correctly.

As I told in previous posts : www.daproducts.com

I used to have one on my D30 and now on my D60 and works great. Very cheap (6US$)

Why obscure the LCD with a piece of plastic?
You can get a replacement for $10 from Canon. Just pull the old one off with a suction cup.

I have Fellowes Digital Screen protectors on both my G2 and my new 10D, they go on easy and seem to cut down on glare when used outside.

I haven't tried the Fellowes protector specifically designed for digital camera LCD screens. I currently use PDA screen protectors for color PDAs with a template. I might take a look at the others to see if they are better suited to the task (less optical distortion).

I saw your pictures on RobGalbraith.com showing the protector dislodged, but you didn't mention replacing the unit. Have you actually gotten a replacement from Canon, and do you have a part number. This would be the way to go as long as Canon approves of user replacement of this item. It also looks like a good way to get to and remove any dust that gets between the LCD and the protector.
