Can anyone help me out with photo paper? The best type, where I can get it etc.... I have a Canon i950 and I have been using Kodak paper, but I think I can improve the quality of my pictures with better paper. Any thoughts?

You will almost always get the best results using the paper recommended by the printer manufacturer...

unfortunately Dana is correct, most printer manufacturers intentionally produce "best-result" ink/paper combinations. Their paper is formulated to respond favourably to their inks, and vice-versa. This insures their printer customers continue to purchase their products - this is how they are able to sell good printers cheap. To save money, I usually run most of my prints through Walmart/Sams club before deciding on which ones to print on my Epson. That way if I don't like some of the shots I can always go back and tell them I don't want it.

cheers,
Wally

Yes, I agree with wallybeavis with both hands. Will help you to save $$, interms of ink and paper.

I went to a local phot show and spoke with the Ilford Rep and he did demo tests with three different brands of printers and his results were fantastic. The paper makes a significant impact on longevity of images as well. It is not just ink. Check out their site for some good information that helps in your decision.

Ilford is also the manufacturer for a number of companies that just resell under their own label

Being an old darkroom person I also lean towards them for their reputation that was built upon very high quality products that they make.

From what I've been reading of the new Canon printers, your best bet is sticking with Canon papers. I've heard of complaints when printing on anything else.

I have an HP DeskJet 1220c and have found, obviously, that HP papers work beautifully, but so do certain Kodak papers. For example, Kodak Premium and Kodak Ultima Satin both produce great results, but the Kodak Ultima Glossy produces very poor prints, as does any Konica paper with my particular make of printer / ink formulation.

I also have a Canon i950 and have tried the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy and the more expensive Photo Paper Pro in the 4 x 6 borderless size. The difference is very slight, if any at all in my opinion. Until tomorrow I think, Staples has a buy one get one free on the Photo Paper Plus Glossy.

Log on to redriverpaper.com - they sell paper and i am trying some of it right now with nice results. They sell a sample package of several kinds of paper (glossy, matte, etc). good luck!

I purchased my first Ilford Galerie paper - smooth pearl paper and all I can say is, "Outstanding!" I have a wide format HP printer and was looking for 13" x 19" paper. The only brand that I found was Ilford at a local camera shop called Keeble and Schucat. It was a bit pricey for my taste, but didn't have much of a choice, so I bought it.

I did a large print (needed a full bleed 11" x 14") and got something I thought I'd never see... a commercial quality print out of an inkjet!

The next time I go there, I'm going to pick up a couple of other papers to experiment with...

Their technical support is awsome as well. The instruction sheet did not provide appropriate profiles for my printer - I got a response from them in less than 24 hours, considering I live in California, and Ilford technical support responded in Switzerland! I'm very impressed overall.

Thanks for the heads up on the Staples sale. It ends on May 10 so there's still time to stock up.
