I'm considering buying the Canon EF 50 MM 2.5 macro
(possibly) with the Life-size converter.

The Sigma 50 MM 2.8 macro is already 1:1, therefore smaller & cheaper than Canon.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bear in mind that the 1.6x multiplier is in effect, so you will get 1.6x life size with the life size converter. You should also take a long look at the 100mm macro which will give you better working distance and continuous focus from 1:1 to infinity. Again, you can actually get 1.6x life size on the image.

Can someone explain what you mean about 1:1? I've seen the half size reference with the Canon 50mm macro lens and I'm not sure what that means.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "better working distance".

With the Sigma don't I get continuous focus from 1:1 to infinity, a closer minimum focal distance of 7.4" & it's smaller. The only down side I see is the 2.8 vs the Canon 50's 2.5.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

What you are missing is that the Sigma is not a Canon.
If the cost saving of the Sigma over the Canon is important then buy the Sigma - otherwise buy the Canon; simple really.
Canon bodies and lenses are made for each other, 3rd. party lenses are designed to fit Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta et al. with a change of mount/electronics and therefore tend to be more of a compromise.

Thats a big No-no, or at least in my book..

1:1 is always 1:1 since there is no such thing as focal multiplier, its only the angle that changes, or you might say that its a smaller crop of the picturecircle. But it will still be 1:1 on the CMOS..
This is easily checked by taking a photo of a ruler.
The 10D Cmos is 22.7 mm and so the ruler would also be 22.7mm long on the picture. And it is..

I have a Sigma 50mm macro, it has good optics but mechanics is terrible.
1:1 means an object mesuring 1cm will be registred as 1cm in film.

1:1 means that whatever you're taking a picture of will be that size on the film (or sensor). If a lens can focus down to 1:1, then things that are 1cm across in real life will be 1cm across on the sensor. The 1.6 crop factor doesn't really have anything to do with it, except that you can take 1:1 pictures of bigger objects with 35mm film since the film is bigger. You won't be able to get 1:1.6 with a D60 if the lens can only focus to 1:1.

Hope that helps.

I have both older and a new Sigma 50 mm macro. The older lens is a rattle trap, but the newer has been dependable and sharp.

I do a lot of very tight macro work and am pleased with the results.

To clarify what my understanding is now...The 1:1 ratio (lifesize) has to do with min. focusing distance. The way I understand it is two 50mm lenses have the same field of view so they should have the same ratio, but since the Sigma can focus closer to the subject, it can get the bigger image just on closeness alone. Is this correct?

Thanks,

Jeff

One additional note regarding the newest Canon 100mm macro is that it is internal focusing. The barrel length stays the same and does not extend when focusing.

The Canon 100mm USM lens is worth every penny. It is the first Canon lens that i bought, and I am extremely satisfied. It is totally sealed, so you don;t have to worry about dust or moisture getting in the lens, it is fairly light and short, and works like a charm (as well as being razor sharp). I was going to compromise with a Sigma (about half the price), but am glad I didn't (besides, the Sigma zoom is not compatible with the 10D).

No.. its not really sealed..no.

Only some L-lenses is weathersealed

But the EF 100/2.8 Macro USM is still a wonderful lens.
