View Full Version : Advantages of G 12 over G 11?

Can someone enlighten me? Is there a huge difference between the HD video and the standard video if all you are doing is catching the little moments of your kids. The other thing that drives me nuts is the cropping that occurs with prints when shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio. You can change to 3:2 (or 16:9 for that matter) with the G 12. I can't see that you can do that with the G 11. I'm sure IQ is the same. I have seen the "best of" threads. Thanks....

What about aspect ratio? Can you shoot in 3:2 with the G 11? (I'm sure you can, it just doesn't say so on the canon site) Honestly, I don't think the HD vid is that big of a deal if your just doing little snipits of the kids. I mean this isn't a true video camera we are talking about. HD or not it is still only 30 FPS.

Per dpreview (where you can find all specs, including image sizes/aspect ratios for both):

"Here is a list of the key differences:

Slightly lighter (by 4g)
Higher resolution video mode (720p up from VGA)
ISO expansion up to 12,800 (at 2.5MP)
ISO control in 1/3EV steps
New front control dial (similar to that found on EOS DSLRs)
Greater choice of aspect ratios
Hybrid IS mode
HDR mode
Electronic spirit level
Tracking AF mode"

I have a G11, so I'm not really familiar with the the G12. If you're looking to upgrade and don't care about video, then stick with the G11. I am.

Okay, I need to check DP preview...Thanks

Well, the G 11 doesn't offer 3:2 AR. Can you re-size in lightroom 3 to get around the cropping issues when printing? I ask these questions because I'm actually thinking about, of all things, downgrading.

I could of saved $ 41 CAD by getting a new G 11. Instead I bought a G12, after the knowledgeable camera store clerk reviewed the differences.

Slightly lighter (by 4g)
Higher resolution video mode (720p up from VGA)who wouldn't want higher resolution in any camera
ISO expansion up to 12,800 (at 2.5MP)like it for situations if I want a pix in a darker environ...not a great pix necessarily...but at least I can capture something
ISO control in 1/3EV stepsImportant to me...
New front control dial (similar to that found on EOS DSLRs)Have on my Pentax K10D...I use this all the time on the K10 and the G12....really handy
Greater choice of aspect ratioslike the options
Hybrid IS mode
HDR mode
Electronic spirit levelreally good....I don't have on any of my DSLR's....saves me time....I use it all the time
Tracking AF mode"another feature that is excellent to have

Any decent photo editing software will let you crop/resize an image to any aspect ratio you like - all shooting 3:2 or 16:9 or whatever in-camera does is throw away pixels to crop the sensor's native 4:3 image.

You will always have cropping issues when printing because the most common print sizes - 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 are all different aspect ratios. 2:3 makes it easy to print 4x6's, but it makes it harder to print 8x10's. So it's all a tradeoff.

FWIW, I've yet to understand why I would want to crop the shot in the camera instead of somewhere else in my workflow.

For quick printing 4x6 for a photo album. Not everyone wants a "workflow".

Exactly, sometimes I just want to make some simple adjustments and print. However, FWIW, I have reconsidered what I going to do. I will be keeping the G12 as it is an incredibly awesome little camera. With that, I'm out of this conversation! :)

Fair point. I am so used to the workflow, I don't even think about it.
