Lack of aggresiveness in a swarm is normal from what I've seen in "nature" shows and personal experience - no hive/kids/honey to defend, as they are on their way to setting up a new home.

I did the same w/a smaller swarm a few days ago, and I'm allergic to bee stings! (Wife used some endearing terms like "You idiot, get away from them!) :-)

I got within a couple of inches and they never really even stirred from the tree limb. Still got a good adrenalin rush out of it...

Hey Danna, I didn't release you were my brother in law,
because you wife and my wife must be sister. I too heard the word "idiot" more than one time when I had my hands less that a couple of feet from the swarm. Wonder what words will come out of there mouth when the first tornado comes along. lol
