I just received a new Circ. polarizer from BH. When I opened the case and removed the paper insert, I peomptly noticed that the retaining ring for the glass element was loose/dislodged. I examined it and also observed that on the side opposite the opening in the retaining ring there is a bow in the ring, which I presume tensions the ring.

So, I put it back into place and cleaned the filter...I am just wondering if others have had this experience or problem and whether I should promptly return the filter. Thanks.

You might not realize it, but you have to be able to rotate the filter once it is mounted to the lens. You rotate the filter to adjust how it affects the image. Look at a reflection on water or glass through the filter and rotate the filter to see the effect. Note that you MUST have the male threads on the side near your face, or you will see no effect with a circular polarized filter. A linear polarized filter can be viewed through either side, but not a circular polarized filter.

Thanks...I appreciate your remarks, but I am saying that the retaining ring that holds the glass inside the assembly was not inside the assembly...I am not talking about how to use the filter...although I must say they should consider some directions for those who don't know.

Could it be that jarring in shipment popped the retaining ring out? If the glass isn't broken and the retaining ring can be reinstalled properly, I'd just do that.

If it's a cheap filter with a lousy design that would make you feel it might come apart again, I might consider returning it and getting a better product.

You didn't say what make and model of filter you have. Knowing that might help with a decision.

Yes; I thought it might be shipping or such. It is a Hoya basic polarizer (circ) @77mm. $75.00 or so.

I generally get the ones with the best multicoating that I can afford, but it should work fine for you - assuming the retaining ring can be reinstalled in a way that it will stay in place properly.

The 77mm CP filter I bought is this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=1&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=SearchBar&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&shs=houvcpu77&image.x=3&image.y=5
