The manual describes set up of AEB and Focus-BKT settings (page 100-102) similarly. However Focus BKT icon will not display on LCD.

#1 Canon Tech told me that no canon has ever had the ability to take 3 consecutive shots automatically in AEB or Focus-BKT. I told him that I did in AEB but not in Focus-BKT.

#2 Canon Tech left me on hold for 50 min. with no answer.

#3 Canon Tech explained that to get Focus-BKT icon displayed you need to push MF button (which was not in the manual). That said, three pics were taken automatically, but with no noticable difference between "nearer, farther, nuetral" images with maximum settings.

#4 Canon Tech told me that differences will not be visible on LCD but only on PC. Downloaded pics still had no visible differences in settings.

#5 Canon Tech told me that difference will be subtle and only noticeable with subjects closer than two feet or landscape pics (huh?). Still no difference at max settings.

#6 Canon Tech told me that it allows focus lock on subject and subsequent two shots (automatically sequenced by camera) to be taken with subject at left and right of center (huh?).

My question is...What is the proper operation of this feature and what scenario would it be used for?

Everything Canon described for you seems correct to me. The increments of focus, on either side of what's hopefully a good center focus to begin with, are fairly small, but adjustable. I have used that feature in the past with macros, because I'm never sure if the focus is perfect when composing the image on the LCD or EVF, again, as Canon described. Try it on some macros and you'll be able to see the differences between the three shots, but not if you move the camera while the three shots are being taken. Ideally, use a tripod. If you feel that the different focus settings between the three shots are not easily discernable, you can widen that gap by using the camera's menu.

I've actually found the exposure bracketing to be much more useful, and usually start with the center point set to -1/3 EV, and the two side points set to the smallest possible increment on either side.
