I have the 20d with the Tamron 28-75mm as a walkaround, & the sigma 15-30mm for wide angle shots, what is the concensus of opinion on a long lens perhaps 70-200mm 2.8 IS ??

IF, and that's not the case with me, one does not mind a heavy lens the 70-200mm f/2.8 Canon is certainty worth a look. The IS version has issues and costs a bit more, I would lean to the non-IS. And, if size and weight is a consideration the combo of the 135L f/2 and 1.4X TC could be the answer. Also, the 135L is perhaps as sharp a lens as Canon has ever made.

depends on your definition of "long" !
Canon 70-200IS L • Canon 100-400IS L • Sigma 50-500

Take a look at the new Canon 70-300 IS USM. Mine arrived this week and the results are very pleasing. I am using it with a 20D.

70-200mm zooms are the cream of the crop in the mid to telephoto zoom dept. Excellent performance and image quality bordering on that of the best primes. Certainly the best zooms made in this regard.

I agree though that long is not the right term for 200mm..
Do you need the extra light gathering of f/2.8?

If not then perhaps look at a 400mm for a real "long" lens

But what are your needs? a 70-200mm may not be what you are looking for, maybe you want something with more range like the 100-400mm.

if you need 2.8, fast focus, take pic in low light 70-200 2.8L IS the best

if you always shoot in good light 100-400 would do

if you shoot sports and need really long range either 300 2.8 or 400 2.8
