Why can't I save in RAW mode when I have the sports, portrait, etc programmed modes selected?
Secondly, I really wish the JPEGS weren't embedded in the RAW file. Extracting JPEGS becomes just one more step to complete to be able to share photo's with friends and family

The easy shooting modes don't allow you to use raw. I guess Canon figured this would make them less easy to use.
If you are going to use the embedded JPGs, why bother to shoot raw? Just shoot Large/Fine JPG and be done with it.

I agree with you, Roger. I just wish there was a CF that would allow me not to embed jpegs in the RAW file! I'd rather have the card space.

I like to use the embedded JPEGS for quick viewing, and small prints. I like the option of going back to the RAW for that occasional really good picture that I want to print in a larger format or need to correct exposure levels.
My wish list.
Custom function to allow raw in program mode
Custom function to save JPEG and RAW as seperate files

What camera are we talking about? My D60 allows all quality settings, including RAW, in all exposure modes. The manual clearly states this.

Can't speak for the D60, but the D30 and 10D go back to "large" when you choose of of the easy shooting modes.

I will have to check at home, but I remember my D60 would shoot RAW in all modes.
The 10D on the other hand definately reverts to Jpeg in point and shoot modes.
I had never put the camera in green square mode until yesterday, when I was showing someone how it could be turned into a point and shoot and I looked at the images remaining counter and went,'That's not right'; I then used menu and looked at the settings and saw the camera had factory default to jpeg medium/fine. I fixed this to large/fine, but it took me a few seconds to remember that in P&S mode would not let me shoot RAW.
It would be irratating, but since I don't use the P&S modes, not a problem for me. I do think however, that this is a bit of arrogance on the part of Canon to disable RAW in those modes.
