What you should see (left to right):

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS

I know that non of these lens are L, but for the price of a 16-35L, I can get these three lens instead.

I just did a focus test on the 30mm f/1.4 and it seems to be fine.

I can vouch for the 30mm and 50mm! I have these and I am very happy with them. They are much sharper than my roommates 16-35mm. Especially the 30mm. Its noticably sharper at 1.4 than the 16-35 at 2.8. Don't get me wrong here though, the 16-35 is the sharpest zoom I have seen in this range. But those primes that you have listed ROCKS! I have never used the 17-85mm but you can read the reviews here:

Seems like it got an "ok" rating. Hope this helps.

Not a bad line up there pal, i'd have maybe gone for longer primes seeing as you're coverd up to 85 with your zoom. But then everybody should have that 50 and the sigma's getting great reviews

I've gone the all prime route, 35mm 50mm 85mm 135mm at some point i'll add a wide but it's not my fav focal length, so no real rush.

i dig primes also. just can't beat them in low light. i've heard lots of good things about the 17-85.

I discovered something new about the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The lens would focus properly only if it was put into AI Focus mode. One shot or AI Servo would give improper focusing on small text w/ small f-stop.

Has anyone else with the 30 experienced this?
