With the track season coming to a close, I thought I'd share some of my personal favourites from my first few months of photography.

You're comments good and bad are always welcome, and I invite you to share your best shots.

Here's to my final trips of the year, BTCC and BSB at Brands.

Oh Lord, there's another month and a half of the track season left... far too early for "best of the year". I hope to get at least one or two more decent shots in during the 10 events I have left!

Ahhh... well... the speedway season is nearly over for me (it does take place on a track!)... so I suppose I can get away with posting a couple:

A bit of panning...

The traditional first bend shot...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/blog/images/20050729145123_blog005.jpg

An angle not often seen...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/blog/images/20050729213801_blog014.jpg

And the crash shot (rider was unharmed)...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/blog/images/20050822000901_ei002.jpg

There are quite a few to choose from over the last 6 months or so... I'll probably change my mind later *lol*

Here's one I like because it tells a nice story. It's from the 1000 Kilometers of Spa-Francorchamps in April this year. The race was in foggy (real foggy) and cold conditions. Vanina Ickx was driving the Rollcentre Dallara and was supposed to come into the pits for fuel and tyres while the safety car was out. As she came along the start/finish straight she was waving to signal that she had seen the pit board which told her to come into the pits next time round. The crew did a fantastically quick service and soon she was rolling down the pit straight again. To Martin Short's horror though, the Dallara was stopped at the red lights at the end of the pit straight. At that moment Martin Short was just standing there and watched in total disbelieve how the whole traffic passed the not moving Dallara. Still, they finished the race in third place.

Somehow it would seem rude not to add a few more of my fave speedway shots... along with a bit of commentary... ;)

Moving round the outside of the track presented an interesting - but dangerous - shooting opportunity. With no air barrier between me and the riders, the only protection from an errant bike was a wire-mesh fence. Not somewhere to hang around for long. I stood well back, on tip-toe. This is the result: A rare head-on shot...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/ci004.JPG

Shot at 420mm, this is a full-frame head-on shot on the first bend at Rye House. A millisecond later and the rider's front wheel would have started to edge out of the bottom of the frame. More by luck than judgement, but I was pleased with the way that the dust made for a nice uncluttered background...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/yea002.jpeg

It's not all fun and games at the Speedway. Arena Essex number one rider Mark Loram was in pensive mood before the start of the meeting with Wolverhampton. Results weren't going Arena's way and it was about to go from bad to worse as the Wolves went on to thrash the home side by 39-60. The riders are always happy to pose for a pic, but often it's a candid shot that better illustrates the story...

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/yea003.jpeg

A rider makes his way back into the pits prior to a meeting - a fisheye view behind the scenes at Arena Essex. An interesting mixture of fading natural light and artificial illumination from the pits. Note the way that the home riders (right) have more light bulbs than the visitors. Hmmmm.

http://www.tgsphoto.co.uk/forum_images/yea004.jpeg

If I was forced to pick an absolute fave from the year, I'd probably choose this as the most satisfying pic. There's something about the angle of the riders and the composition...

Thanks for looking... and here's to making even better images in 2006 ;)

Mmm... I've always liked that Austin Seven shot from Gurston. Great car dynamics and you've caught the driver's concentration too.

JTThanks John... it was my first season shooting speedway, so I was pleasantly surprised at the photographic opportunities that it presented. The tracks are simple, short, dusty ovals but the lack of brakes on the machinery makes for some 'interesting' racing

I rarely, if ever, shoot 4-wheeled motorsport, but I'll certainly be checking your site for some inspiration if I'm ever assigned to do so.

Talking of which... Black & white speedway? Hmmm...

It's very cool. I'd like to see a little more punch and saturation out of the post processing... :) but I think that might be just our style in the US.

So... it looks like you grabbed a short quick pan swinging to your right? Which would mean the cars at the back would have double the speed blur going to your left. What a great effect.

Nice capture.

Thanks John,

Was a short pan to the right, I like the effect of slower shutter speeds on pans. I have been told before do a bit of post processing to get more punch out of my pics and have started experimenting recently.

Tom.

My first post here, partly as an attempt to keep this thread rolling along! hint hint! Some great pics here so far!

I mostly take motrosports pics, as a hobby - nothing officially pro! - but these are a couple of my favs from last year. Not too happy with the results of the jpg compression to under 100k, but hey, you get that! Have to get some webspace to host larger files...

No p'shopping involved but to resize and optimize for the web. Any comments welcome!

Cheers
