You could start by creating your personal web page and post some sample photos to advertise yourself. Then later, contribute to forums and post some samples of great takes. Give and take some critiques. Since you've already stated your area, maybe dig deeper into different photo techniques and style of photography. network with people is most important becasue if you get invited to an event by the host, then it's a ticket to making some $$$.
Hope this helps.

You can try taking some photography courses at local colleges or universities and from there you can ask around or get references from the instructor. Most instructors that teaches photography is either a past pro or someone that knows somebody in the industry that can give you a lead.

Hi Ben, just as a heads up - other australian sports photographers are likely to see you as competition and would therefore be unlikely to give you too much assistance. In relation to sports I would think that your best networking would be with the sports media (magazines/newspapers/websites) and the athletes and their managerment.
Have a think about as a sports photographer - who would buy your photos or be able to direct people who are looking to buy photos to you? They are the people you want to network with.
I wouldn't be holding your breath on getting a list of names and contact details for valuable contacts as they will be the closely guarded secrets of a working pro.
That's how it works in Rock'n'roll so I would presume that sports are much the same.
Good luck with it! I hope my comments are of assistance.
