View Full Version : Pinout on G3 power connector

I'm trying to find out what the pinout information is for the external power/charger plug on the Canon Powershot G3.
I'm thinking of making an external battery pack consisting of some AA cells to plug into the DC in to extend the battery life and charge the Canon battery when no mains are available.
I know I can buy a spare battery but they are overpriced and only of use to this one piece of kit that I own.
Many thanks.

just FYI
generic batteries can be had for as little as $9.95 (1200 mAh)

if you do put together an external power pack could you post any info/pics/specs... for those of us who are too lazy to look it up ourselves :D
cheers,

hi Entropy1024,
U may have to open up the charge (black box) to check those connections. But on the label, they did state which are POS(+) and NEG(-) pins, I guess.

No need to do that. I'm fairly sure that there is only a 2 line DC supply so one pin is dead anyway. Borrow a voltmeter from somewhere and do some tests.
If you can't get a meter, I may have time to measure mine.
I was thinking of doing something similar - just not with batteries. If I go travelling with the missus, I potentially have:
2x Mobile Phones
1x Camera
1x Archos MP3 player
maybe laptop
That's a lot of PSU's to carry needlessly - so my plan was to take the most powerful PSU with the highest voltage (that would be the laptop's - which is switchmode so it's fairly light and compact) and make up a number of leads with inline DC-DC converters or regulators to provide the correct voltage for the other devices.
Haven't had time to try and I'll have to be careful 'cos all the warrenties will be out the window if I get it wrong.
Let me know if you want me to check the pinouts.
Cheers

Wow...I know that gadgets like what you propose are well sought after in the Palm Pilot world. I suspect you are onto something if you can pull this off!
