Ok I know the aperture is very limiting but is the Bigma worth having for Football(soccer)
the reach 50-500 just seems as though it would be a god send
but it would be limited to good clear days!!!
or would I be better served waiting a few more months and continuing to save the pennies for a used 300 2.8
cant see me ever having enough for a Canon 300 but Sigma or the surprisingly highly rated tokina might be within budget if I can get them 2nd hand
>£1000???

Just my 2cents.
I think you should look here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752
Just for starters It has what others on this forum suggest.
My own personal Favorites are any of the 70-200 2.8s with a t-con especcially if you need the extra light. The Bigma is nice but you may have to shoot in the night or a bad day and youll need the speed that a 2.8 or better can get you. Of course It appears you have a magic drain pipe 80-200/f2.8

for football (soccer or american football), if i can find a clean background, id take focal lenth over 2.8 aperture, ive never shot with the bigma though so i can tell you...actually i dont even thing i know what one looks like, just know the name from reading...

but a nice 70-200 2.8 isnt long enough on a regulation sized field 90% of the time

i imagine AF would be a slight issue on the bigma though, but like i said, i dont know anything about them really...

I think the Bigma will be fine for footie, it's not as bad in poor light at everyone makes out, and having the ability to drop to 50 without changing lens will be priceless if the action swings your way and someone scissor kicks another player in the face... you'd be gutted if you were mid-panic-lens-swap :)

use a monopod though, cos it'd probably get a bit tedious using it handheld. they're quite heavy.
