Picking a lens

Getting a 60d in the next week or two, and I don't want the standard kit lens.

I'm mostly into landscape, and just snap shot type photography. Plus I want to get into a little video.

Anyone suggest some lens under $500, I was looking at canons 50mm for a possibility.
