My learning curve with my kit continued today at Knockhill in Scotland where the Jock Taylor Memorial Races (for sidecars), and the Scottish Championship Bike Racing Finals were taking place. Here are 10 of over 300 hundred that were taken...

These bikes must have shrunk in the traditional Scottish weather...

Awesome series, some of the best I've seen here to date. The shot of the monkey man doing his thing on the side car is excellent, hell they're all excellent!

Thanks for the complements! As I said at the beginning, I took over 300 shots, but many, while looking fine on the camera, were not pin-sharp on the PC. I'm a bit annoyed with myself for that as I was perhaps keeping the shutter speed too low (between 1/250-1/500) due to it being a dull day. Perhaps if I had sacrificed a bit more ISO, then more shots would have been in focus.

Hi rudgej,

Nice shots, I like the last one of the mini-moto.

You couldn’t have been very far from me when you took No7, I was standing at the hairpin both days.

I know what you mean about the dull day I had the ISO set at 400 and shot at 1/200-1/320/sec most of mine came out blurred as well but I got a few nice ones thankfully.

Hi Klippie,

There were a few photographers around (but not all had Canon gear though...) I did notice someone with a 100-400L - that wasn't you was it?

Although the weather was a bit dull, we were quite lucky on sunday with the odd bright spell, although I left about 2:30 when it was drizzling, and there was the delay due to the crash.

I was taking most shots with my 70-200 F4L lens, and my friend had the 2.8 IS version. These must have made us look "professional" as a female at the mini-moto track had a grand-daughter that was racing, and wanted to know what magazine the photos would appear in!

They all look great to me. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be 3.
Very good work.

Hi rudgej,

No it wasn’t me, I have a Sigma 100-300mm APO on my 350D.

I also saw a few photographers carrying around the white stuff...

When I get time to look through my own pics I'll post some in the sports section.

Thanks cntry. Given my focussing issues, pictures 3-5 were among the sharpest simply because the bikers were approaching me, and my panning abilities didn't affect the quality too much...

When I get time to look through my own pics I'll post some in the sports section.Yes I wondered in retrospect about choosing the transportation forum. I saw the word "bike" in the forum description and that was why I chose here without applying any more logical thought.

I am off to Knockhill this Sunday for an assignment
A local girl who has been Karting for a few years went to the circuit for one of
their Legends Experiance days and was so impressive they have offered her a drive this weekend
in the Legends Races
so I have to get shots of her in and around the car plus racing for a possible newspaper feature
but i can only go Sunday as I am doing Football on Saturday

By strange coincidence, when I was at Knockhill (which was my first time), I was with a friend who stays in Linlithgow like yourself. I liked the fact that you could wander all round the course, and pretty much shoot from any location, but the only thing I found annoying was that some of the potentially good sites had mesh fencing in the way.

yep especially the outside of duffus dip
but hopefully I will have a pass on Sunday for all area access so I can get in the pits for the portrait shots and on the outside o fthat curve but inside the mesh
its also a great viewpoint to shoot directly up the straight with the cars coming at you from the start

I saw a few photographers on Sunday with the Press passes (that looked like t-shirts from a distance). I presume that they don't hand them out too easily though?

The closest I could get to a straight on from the start was to climb partially up the stairs from the bridge to the central piece of land. It would have been great though if you could have got shots from the centre of the bridge.
