I tried my Canon 2x Mk2 with my Sigma 300 2.8 at the weekend as was disappointed to see that they were not really interested in playing with each other.
I couldn't get it to focus and the aperture still showed as 2.8
Anyone else had this problem?

I ran a quick check. I have recently sold my set of version II TCs, but the new TC III set works fine between a 1Ds III and 5D II to my 120-300mm f2.8 Sigma.
2X reads as f5.6 and focuses accurately. I seem to recall that being the case with the older set and I believe the Sig 300 and 120-300 purposely have larger diameter rear fittings to accommodate Canon TCs.
I would say you have a problem--don't know where it may be. If your 2x works with your Canon lenses, I'd assume the problem is with the Sigma. If cleaning the contacts doesn't help, it may be time to send it to Sigma

Seems to be a known issue. My Sigma 300 f/2.8 EX doesn't play w/ my Kenko Pro300 DG 1.4xTC
