View Full Version : Soft Focus Filters

I have recently purchased a Canon G2 and will be ordering a 420EX and Lumiquest bounce kit very soon. I am interested in experimenting with portraits and have already played with Photoshop to successfully soften a couple of people pictures. However, I prefer to obtain results 'optically' and was wondering which soft focus filters seem to offer the best results.

I have read several descriptions regarding Tiffen Soft/FX#3, Tiffen Black Diffusion/FX#3/5, Hoya Softener A, Cokin 083, Nikon Soft #1 and am still undecided. Highly subjective I know but I just wondered if any of you have been satisfied with the results of any of these filters. Not looking for 'mush', just a gentle softening, slight 'dreamy' look whilst retaining a relatively sharp focus especially the eyes.

I am leaning towards the Tiffen Black Diffusion but would be interested if anyone has tried it. There's also the Tiffen Softnet types out there.....so many choices!

Thankyou in advance,
Nick.
