hey all.

I'm a total and complete moron and I keep shooting AVIs in portrait mode. Even as I tell myself i won't ever do it again, my composition habits get the best of me. I've searched the archives of this forum and found a lot of other people asking how to rotate the AVIs, and they've all recommended "virtualdub" but I'm on mac, and there's no virtualdub for mac. I imagine quicktime pro could do it but I don't want to shell out for that... anyone know of any freeware avi editors for mac that can rotate an G6 movie?

Hy Bryan,

My father, RPolitSr who always talks about your excelent pictures and posts, has asked me to jump in and try to find a way of doing the AVI rotation on a Mac. One of my mother's coworkers recently had this same problem with a documentray he had shot, and he felt terrible about shooting the video side ways, I understand the frustration.

I mostly use professional software, and they, of course, will excel at this job... for the Mac, FinalCut Pro will surely do it, I use Adobe PremierePro and AfterEffects (this one is available for Mac) and discreet's Combustion.

Actualy, yes, QuickTime PRO does it, and does it whith two clicks realy, and in my opinion it would be the easiest way of doing this. If you decide to go doing it this way, here's a good tutorial:

I do not have a MAC "on me" :) right now, but I assume you have iMovie, as it came for free on early operating systems. I've found some plug-ins that rotate clips: Simple Rotate 2.0 at $1.50 and there's a free trial version. This is the link:

There's a free plug-in for iMovie from cfx that turns a clip, but I do not know if it works on AVI files, it talks about DV files and pixel aspect ratio, but it would be worth giving it a try, here's the link:

On a side note, if you want to output to TV you will have to either add bars at the side or re-crop the video (probably not the best choice, as surely people would end up be-headed ;) )

Hope this quick research is of any help, if you have any further ideas, I would be more that glad to try something different.

good luck,
Rafael Polit Jr.
