Hello,
I just picked up my 1st digital SLR "canon EOS 10D" and after messing around with it it has me wondering if this camera is too much for a beginner? In manual mode i am lost, and in auto mode i feel like im wasting the cameras potentel and the whole reason to purchase a SLR. Is there any general setings i should start at with the shutter speed, iso, aperture, and what do those mean. Also i see some pics with boarders, is there any way to make the camera do this or is it all done on the computer? Thanks. noob.:(

I am fairly new to digital photography as well. I bought a rebel xt about 4 months ago. I have done extensive online reading, taken courses at a local college. Just take it easy. Start in full auto, after you get the hang of it. Go to the manual modes. Don't be afraid to try something new. That is all part of learning. Here is a website that I have through and was very helpfull.
www.shortcourses.com

Hope that helps a little. Good luck!!!

the good news is that as you learn more about photography and want to experiment more - you wont be disappointed with the camera you have and throw it away and start again

have a read of these

If you are new to photography you may be interested in these free online "books" guides

Welcome
It may all seem overwhelming at first but as they say you have to crawl before you can walk.
Follow the recommendations that have been posted so far it will help you a lot.
Taking digital pictures is cheap so take a lot and don't be afraid to experiment. If it doesn't come out erase it.
There is also the after camera work, most people have Photoshop, but there are other programs out there, so look before you leap. Search for articles on line, inform your self and then make some decisions.
Take advantage of the Forum and search the threads that have been written about any number of subjects, that will help you a lot.
Once you have some pictures don't be afraid to post them and ask for comments, it will help you learn.

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Canon 10D ought to be good enough. Start for the first day, and only shoot stuff with the full automatic "green box" mode. See what you get. For the second day, shoot only with Tv mode. See what you get. Next, use the Av mode. See what you get. Continue that way until you have all of the various modes mastered.

One effective technique is to set the camera to one of the basic modes, like Sports. Half press the button and see what the camera was picking for shutter and aperture settings. Now flip the mode over to Tv or Av or P or M and use the same settings. Play with the autofocus modes. Play with the drive modes. Try flash.

Just keep learning one new thing each day until you have it all.

I'm looking forward to that day :)

Just remember that google will be your late night friend for the next few months. This forum is also full of great threads. When you have a question about something just come here and type some key words into the search bar, hold on and enjoy the ride.

It is quite amusing really - the original OP is probably a pro photographer by now!

Search for more posts by the same OP... He sold the camera a month later, and claimed to be giving up the hobby... He hasn't been back since 2005!
