Does anyone use online grocery shopping and if so whose service do you find the best assuming you have tried a few? Or are they all much of a muchness and it comes down to the reason "we" may go to the store we always do???
We do. SWMBO alternates between Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ocado depending on what vouchers we have and who is cheapest for that week's shopping list.
She does her shopping on http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ and it tells her what's available or not at all 3 shops and tells you which one will be cheapest. More convenient and time efficient than having to drive to several shops. :)
They are all similar. You set a time. They ring if they are going to be early or late. But they are generally on time. They unload, you store and your weekly shopping is mostly done in a few minutes.
Mostly. Because you might find you still prefer to choose your meat or vegetables yourself. Though not always. Depends on what you are ordering.

Ooooo! water cooled  as per Sharp-Shooters comment about cleaning out I do hope that gets done as well ;)
From memory my CPU using the Intel stock HSF idles at approx 41 and maxs out when I have looked at approx 48, (though I did do a stress test a while back and that ran at I think 56 the graphics card I think runs at 36 ~ I had to setup a slight overclock in the BIOS because the so called defaults were not right for my hardware as I was getting BSOD with a RAM voltage issue, running on "auto" in the BIOS the CPU was 38 to 39 degrees. So all temps well below the warning level.
FWIW choice of make??? I used to use IBM but have used WD for all the more recent purchases but what surprised me was how noisy the WD 'Blacks' (500GB x 2 & a 750GB) I put in the current build the older WD's I used were nothing like as noisy ~ I can hear odd clicks & whirrs from them and I have the power management set to 'no power down' so they are always 'up', so it must the the spin speed variance and the heads moving back & forth. "Blacks" are just below Enterprise grade so it has not concerned me but just a tad odd??? Would need to check my SMART readings for the drives but think they were/are mid40's so again well below the warning level.
Some of the hard drives can be noisey. The Samsung F1 are meant to be good drives.
I cant remember the figures for the temps. now but the graphics card use to go above 70C and then play up, But this is when playing games so the GPU is working hard

I have been online shopping for anout ten years now. I started off with Tesco, but they got too unreliable. We now shop with Asda. Their delivery is much better, the website is not so streemlined, but once you have done your first shop, it remembers it and you just pick from that next time. Asda's own brand stuff is far superior to any other store in its price range. Although their fruit and Veg has something to be desired, they all fall down here. Ill be sticking with them for the near future.
This is the one thing that folk forget IMO ~ a PC is like the best dust collector you will ever find and mine sits on the desktop not the floor! I take mine outside and with the covers off use a compressed air 'duster' to blow it out and the airfilters if I find they are especially clogged get a wash under the tap.
As for Lenny, do I recall he is a Springer? Well AFAIK they just love puddles ~ more otter than dog, they just need to get wet and 'scented' up
Lenny is infact a "Working Cocker". But unfortunately he is also very camera shy. :) Got a few shots on my Iphone this morning, but he really does look beautiful. Ill try and get him in the "Nice" garden, and get a couple of shots. :)

Looks like a full tower you have there ~ if you do not have all the optical drive bays full I would consider shifting the HDDs around and giving each one its own attached cooler fan/hsf that way should be all happy temp wise and not relying on a single fan to keep an almost full drive cage cool??? First time I think I have seen a fan just for the RAM sticks!
I know it is telling you the obvious but you do keep the case sides on when
in 'normal' use, don't you ;) If what we are lead to believe the case makers tell us they are designed for correct airflow etc.

We've used Tesco and Ocado for years, both good. Choose between them depending on what we need that one or other doesn't carry.
So re install. The thing is last year I had a death star drive and that died, so I fitted a Samsung drive. You start to get a bit paranoid, and make sure the back ups are done !
FWIW at work we find that the Hitachi drives will run normally 10-12 degrees hotter than Samsung F1s with Seagates sat in the middle.

If the hard drives need their own cooler then there's something wrong with the drive and it's going to fail on you. My home server is a single U half depth unit with 5 drives in it, with minimal fan cooling, the drives stay at a sensible temperature, a mix of Seagates and Samsung F1s.
The RAM in my gaming machine has proper heatsinking, and some of the servers at work have fans blowing across the RAM. They get rather hot at high clock speeds.
Side off will generally run cooler in my experience, unless you have a case with a wall of fans to push the air around, which is generally when you have a passively cooled CPU. Plenty of manufacturers make cases with appalling airflow, and you pay a lot of money for the good ones (~£100+) though even then some manufacturers just give you a case and you still need to buy more fans for better cooling.

I dont think its quite a full tower, but its a good size case, Yes I could move one of the hard drives up to the 5.25" bays. I had not thought about that.
The RAM has heatsinks on it and I drew the line at water cooling the RAM & HDD !
The only chip not water cooled is the southbridge chip and thats because its under the graphics board.
Yes it does have the side panels on, but this is less of an issue being water cooled

I wonder are the diff in temp by make more to do with the platter count or the design affecting the passive cooling???

I was not arguing that there was a need for such a distibuted arrangement, more that it is/was an option if for some reason he was having airflow issues???
Edit ~ and if one accepts the hype of the drive makers i.e. that they have targeted usages from low demand desktop to 'enterprise' applications then equally possibly the way the drive is cooled maybe more relevent.......and using individual drive cooling may be overkill but if it extends the life of the lower to mid grade spec drives what is the harm? FWIW my oldest drive in the old build was a 13.7GB IBM and I think something 7 or 8 years old and its 80GB next buy was close to that age and both were both still trooping along nicely with the cooling approach I use when I reired them last Oct 2010 when the system failed for none drive related issues.
FWIW my case is a midi tower Lian Li and as mentioned has two 80mm fans blowing over the drive cage (currently has three drives but on the old build had 4 of them), a rear 80mm near the fanned/vented graphics card and an 80mm blowhole one. The rear one I have slowed to 2/3 speed. And yes I could not agree more, many case makers could not care less about airflow and those that do it is not all hype IMO but I read reviews as not all 'best' cases are created equal when comes to their ability to keep things cool.
I thought the rack based case you say you use were designed with good passive cooling in mind on the basis that racked servers if they all had lots of internal fans would add a heck of a lot to the power costs.
At least we are long past the days of computer suites with AC plants and slight temp variations caused the barrel drives to crash and even the Winchesters to give trouble.

It all depends on what your doing with the PC. Note I have a 700W power supply.
The graphics card has 2 x 6 way power connectors on top of the board, and the GPU is over clocked, currently the CPU is not over clocked, but I have had it over clocked then the power consumption increases and the heat output goes up.
For the server farms they have full AC with chilled air flowing through the racks and disipate a lot of power

No idea on that front but the temperature difference is surprising and in small cases with bad airflow a pair of Hitachis will cook each other.
I was not arguing that there was a need for such a distibuted arrangement, more that it is/was an option if for some reason he was having airflow issues???
Didn't mean to sound argumentative, just mentioning that they should be fine in that configuration and that generally a hot drive is indicative of a problem that lots of cooling may mask but could still end in a failure.

Agreed, I've got a Thermaltake mid-tower for my gaming rig which was ~£80 before additional fans. And has the oddity of a door that closes over the front fan vent, form over function there a touch.

The chassis is an old one and a "cheap" one at the time, not that rack cases are ever cheap, the prices are somewhat overinflated. More expensive ones from the likes of Supermicro have walls of fans in them which forces air through front to back. I've seen some 2u cases that had fans all round them blowing air outward, no idea how the air got in but they blew damn hot air out the front/back/sides.
Anywho, mine was custom adapted, the original design had 2 40mm fans and used the PSU for additional rear cooling. I've stripped it out to take the mobo and drives and run the PSU externally, means my rack at home only needs to be about 350mm deep for server and switch rather than twice that for the number of drives. The drives are raised half way up in the case to give all round airflow and reduce heat issues. Rear ducting pulls air away neatly with some 80mm fans rather than a wall of noisy 40mm ones. It's built to be in the room with me, and it's still rather loud but not as bad as it was first built. The problem with rack servers is that noise isn't a concern with the design as you use them to save space in datacentres rather than homes.

Mine is a 650W as I work on the basis of not running anything at max and also for future growth.
The computer room I refered to, I am talking the 1970's and boy was that kept cool............I think if it had a 1degree increase the barrel drives would head crash because of barrel expansion ~ very strange bits of kit IMO.

Hayden no problem :D
I agree that one should not use a 'method' to overcome or mask an underlying problem.............IMO one should be aware of the running temps and on the premise they are all in spec but at the upper end then forced cooling will help and increase the working life of the drive?

If you are in a warm environment then it's what you have to do. Hence a datacentre requiring a ludicrous amount of airconditioning to keep things stable. Rule of thumb wise if your drives are under 40 degrees they'll be fine, 40-50 they are warm and 50+ is time to start worrying if it's a stable temperature. SSDs seem to be worse for temperatures though, poor cooling and an SSD = bye bye data as you can't recover from them like an normal hard drive. Sit them in a computer with internal air temps of 40-50 degrees and they don't last so long.

Hayden, thanks for the added insight re temps ~ must double check what mine are at idle again. FWIW I think my NAS drives report 42C but again now for my peace of mind I will have another look???

Are them right angle view finders any good? Was thinking could be useful at the Airshow in conjunction w with the Manfrotto 393.
Interesting question??? I thought they were only good for low level (tripod) work, though I surmise it corrects for reversal of angle so not like using an TLR without a prism head but would think having your head looking down all the time would take a bit of getting used to? What about using "Live View" with a eyepiece hood???

Yes Dan, I've just been looking myself.
I must have a look through some of my redundant apps as I might already have one.
I'm mainly using the iPhone in conjunction with DropBox to send (almost) live pictures to my mum at home.
Before I leave the house I set up my old laptop to run a homemade VB app which scans a Dropbox directory for pictures and displays them as a slideshow.
The FlickR photos are a bonus to be honest.

It's nothing exact but what I aim for rule of thumb style, though if you have some Hitachi drives I'd allow for warmer temps. Low 40s would be no real concern, constantly hitting high 40s would on the other hand.

Can someone please give me a clue as to why i get such inconsistent exposed images using a flash on camera at parties etc. I have tried dam near every setting there is and there seems no rule to get it right consistently.
I have tried both bodies as well same for both, with 580 II they seem mostly under exposed to some being unusable.
Makes no difference if I bounce off ceiling.
I have just had a thought, the one thing in common is I do use a plastic cover difusser?

Just a heads for those looking to add to their gear collection, Vulcan58 (Andy) is selling the following:-
"Will be slapping the head on Fleebay for £400, and the 1.4 for £200.
Think that is a fair price for either since they're mint."
The 1.4 he refers to is the Canon x1.4 extender mkII and the head is a Whimberley
I asked when he mooted on the Hamps Hogs thread about selling some kit and said he had a Whimberley thinking it could be more to my pocket but sadly a bit rich for me for now................so I said I would let you guys know???

What exposure mode are you using? I find that full Manual is the way to go when using flash indoors. Bounce the flash off the ceiling, use the bounce card in the flash, don't bother with the stofen.

My Dad used one on his 30D for ages. And he swore by it. Not sure if he used it in the air though. I think there is one which has an LCD on it. And you can manouver it almost anywhere.

If you are shooting ettl - what metering mode are you using? If you are using evaluative then the slightest change in the frame could give a very different exposure reading. When using ettl i tend to go for either spot or centre weighted average.
If you mean for manual flashes then i have no idea - it should be consistent.

I have tried every mode possible, but you are right I would prefer to stick to manual. do you use manual and leave the flash on ettl?
Thanks Mike, have been playing for the last hour, the Stofen is certainly making it under expose, but I have made the flash compensate by making it +2/3 rds.
Thing is as you know sometimes you cannot bounce the flash at all, and depending on the distance you want to shoot at, bouncing makes it too weak.
annoying part is you play for ages around the house, in the dark, and you think you got it, got to a party and it all goes wrong again :(, but getting more to grips now thanks.

I generally go manual on the camera with the flash set to ETTL when I'm using on camera flash. Never really had an issue with the exposure, though I spot meter everything so that may have an impact.

After another failure of the 70-300 to work I was reduced to useing my 18-55 and considering this is cropped to an inch of it's life I'm quite pleased with it, it's the best I got anyway.
I think it's time to retire that lens - it's not doing you any favours at all... I like the shot btw, shame you've had to crop in so heavily...

Hey guys,
Sorry about being away for so long. Without going into a boring sob story, truth is I've had sod all motivation and even less inspiration to shoot for pretty much the past year. And my work has blocked access to POTN. So I kinda drifted away.
However, at the start of this month, I decided to push myself back into photography mode and and got started on a photo a day (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cameraobscuraphotography/sets/72157627090462670/) challenge. And with Rob's encouragement, I started relurking...
Forward to today, Day 8, and the card reader of my Canon 7D (also known as "My preciousss") will not take in my CF cards anymore (I tried 2 different ones and they won't slot all the way in and are unreadable).
There must be one or more pins slightly out of place. But I don't want to mess with that and make it worse. Problem is, I'm out for 2 weeks in Switzerland from the 13th of August. So forget the Photo a Day, I need my camera working in 5 weeks.
I generally don't have a car. But I'm going to work into London on Monday. Can anyone recommend a good place to bring in the camera for repair there? Any advice would be MUCH appreciated. I guess I could go to any camera shop. But if you've had positive experiences anywhere, that would be useful to know.
Also, on a more positive note, if anyone wants to try out Google+, I can send out invites. Just PM me your email and I'll send you one. So you can get a POTN circle going if you wish.
Sorry to be back with a question. But I'm a very unhappy Wendy today...

Morning all
Can someone please give me a clue as to why i get such inconsistent exposed images using a flash on camera at parties etc.
Hey mate,
Using the flash in ETTL mode can yield some great quick fire results, but I do find sometimes it goes a bit mental.
I rarely use the flash in camera, however when I do...
I find the most consistent on camera ETTL results, are with the camera in Manual, flash in ETTL and under expose the shot by 2/3 of a stop or so (depending on the results required)
I try to bounce the flash of a wall or similar, and nearly always pop a stofen on when in a room.
I find that some Flash exposure comensation helps, and for a subject 6 feet away that is about my mid point, closer, under expose a little, and further away crank it up.
I know that the distance can be affected but he distance to a wall above/behind/side etc.
But these are my simple baselines.
Also don't forget to put high speed mode on the camera.
I do try switch AV when I'm in a very changeing environment, but it can be a little more unreliable.
I use Evaluative exposure mode most of the time, however have switched to spot metering, espaecially when there is a very light background.

The train up there was good. We took the sleeper train - got a bunk in a cabin which was pretty nice. I did get hammered before and during the journey though so it went very quick
The train back was a bit more of a chore as it was 6 hours during the day but the east coast line from Fife down to around Newcastle is awesome - some of the views are spectacular crossing the birghes over the firths etc and passing small towns like Alnmouth which is beautiful
I think this section of track was voted most beautiful rail ride in the UK

Thanks for the added recommendation Swaffs and for the -1 Ian and Courier. Every opinion helps. Fortunately or unfortunately, I visited Fixation before I read those latest messages and left my preciouss there.
Looks like it will take around 10 days in total to get through the quote and repair + clean up. I should know how bad the damage is by Thursday. Quick question: how long is the Canon warranty for? My camera is about 19 months old.
The other piece of bad news is that the lady there detected some light damage on the CF card i brought there to illustrate the issue. So I might have 24Gb worth of UDMA CF cards to replace as well. :(
On the more positive side, that place is indeed a bit like Ali Baba's cavern. I was so tempted to come out with a used 5D body to try out full frame, a tripod and a light tent. :)

I'm not sure whether the lifetime warranty would work if the camera damaged the card. However, it looks like the 16GB card at least still reads fine on my PC. will try it in the 20D as soon as it's charged. But so far, so good! :D

Nah. I'm too cheap to extend warranties. :)
We'll see how bad it is when I get the quote around Thursday.
As for the light tent, I might still buy it when I go pick up my 7D after they fix it. I was, however, told in no uncertain terms by SWMBO that not picking up the 5D body and not picking up a Panasonic G3 and a pancake lens to tide me over were the "right decision" when it came to "matrimonial harmony".

I do a lot of thinking out or should that be wishfull thinking
If you had a choice of a 7D or 1D MkII what would you buy, if neither but were determined to keep the cost under £1000 and go for a 1D version which would be your ideal choice with sports/wildlife & general all rounder in mind with the caveat that you must be able to use 1.4 or maybe 2.0 convertor with slower lenses???
Then question arises where to look for good quality 2nd hand such bodies with as low an actuation count as possible.............and come to that what sort of costs would you expect to pay??? And if you get the unpleasant surprise of the shutter going and a low count just how mush to repair/replace it???
As I say wishfull thinking but I have started to notice the limitations of the 40D, good though it is, and as such want to be aware of all possible options???
TIA :D

Laurence, I think as good as the mk2 is I think you would find its limits very quickly, the AF is better and you get weather sealed but a rubbish screen and less MP than your 40D, the mk2n was a much better camera but its still a bit old, before I got the mk3 I had a play with one and it just felt dated, saying that ive seen some great shots taken with them and you could say a good camera doesn't stop being a good camera just because a newer model is out.
I would get a 7D with a grip, 18mp, 8fps, excellent screen, much better ISO, great AF (I wish my 5Dmk2 had 7D AF) 100% viewfinder, video etc etc Adrian went from a 40D to a 7D and he loves it as im sure some others on here do, Park cameras have refurbished ones for 979.99 or mr Kerso has them new (two weeks ago) for £1019.

I cant comment on a 1D/7D. But I have gone from a 50D to 7D and I have to say I'm impressed, a great camera. I got mine from the Canon shop on Ebay, it was a refurbished body, and cost me £1005 ! and you get 12 months warrenty. But currently they dont have any DSLR on there.

Thanks guys for the feedback and experiences as appropriate:) As I say this was me thinking out loud because like Wendy's "comments" about 'others approval' this will not be happening quite yet
The 7D has certainly been on my wishlist and I saw refurbs at Focus 2011 on the Calumet stand for £799...........to say I was tempted then would be a massive understatement but I did resist :( Though the 1D (which version in a budget) came into view thinking what is it that I am finding wanting and it has been primarily the AI Servo AF.
So you are probably right in that now to go back 2 generations of 1D is at least one step too far i.e. the MkIII is the sweetspot but that comes at much too higher a price, so I will just keep watching and see how I go???
Sods law says Canon because of their troubles in Japan will advance their plans and bring the 7D MkII with more advanced AF  ahead of cycle but like all things that will be at a premium of "new product". So what does Photokina hold in surprise this year........??? Hmmmm! is Photokina this year?
Edit ~ what I find a little odd is that Park refurbs have a 6 months manufacturers warranty whereas the Canon eBay store say 12 months Canon warranty, now why the difference for what appear to be the 'same' refurbs/source???

The 1DmkII is an excellent camera and you will make fabulous images with it. For ease of use though I would go for the 7D every time, especially if you are looking at the mkII and not the mkIIn.

Hi Rob, yes I was reading the old reviews for the MkIIN and it they were glowing compared to the MkII but I have looked around for some 2ndhand price point comparisons and they must be like hens teeth because I could not readily see any listed...........methinks folk are holding on to those bodies because they are 'good'!
I have seen many 350D's listed on the likes of eBay so perhaps the only way to turn the older kit (350D and lenses - kit and my old 70-300IS) into money is to see if the likes of LCE will offer a decent'ish figure if P/ex it for a 7D ;) ???

Mwahahahahahahaha - that has made me chuckle... "you've dishonoured my family, I will destroy you":lol:
just to offer some input on the 7D / 1D debate - both excellent cameras, if budget is the primary issue the 1D will knock the 40D into a cocked hat (I owned a 40D too) the AF is excellent and despite lower MP & a tiddly screen - you can snap safely in the knowledge the image is in focus - I only really used the histogram for reference to be honest...
couple of things that frustrate me about the 1d mkII - the batteries are massive and as they are 'obselete' they are hit and miss with charge, I have several for my mkII but only a couple are reliable enough for a day photo taking
then you can move swiftly onto a 7D and it's bang up to date - a big screen - lots of MP - great AF system - ISO is fab - full HD video - 100% viewfinder - the battery charger is small enough to take away (the 1D charger is MASSIVE)
all this said - the mkII is now 2 generations (3 I guess if you count the mkIIn) old and it's not a fair comparison - the 7D is clearly more current and less likely to be considered old technology for some time...
sorry waffling... morning gang - still no internet at home and I'm getting withdrawal symptoms! :D

@ Lee ~ thinks for the added insight, especially ref the NiMH batteries......that is one thing that could be a major cost if any one was to sell reconstructed modules........older laptops needing batteries they cost more than the 2nd hand value of the lappy.

I couldn't agree more. I love the 7D. Especially when it's in my hands and not at the lab for repairs. :)
In your situation, I think it would be my body of choice. It does a LOT (add micro adjust, IR flash master, better / more streamlined controls at the back to the list above) and is very well built.
Speaking of my 7D, Fixation just confirmed that CF card reader in the camera needs replacement and that I should check all the cards I used in it. Guess there is a bent pin after all. That will cost me £100 including the parts (worth about £20), the work, a camera and sensor clean. Not too bad. Can't wait to get it back.
I've been soldiering on on my Photo a Day with the LX3, but I miss my lenses and my viewfinder. Still, while the LX3 doesn't stand up to pixel peeping so well, it's still a nice P&S camera...
