Hi all!

Hoping somebody can give some tips on how to successfully photographing jewellery if you do not have soft boxes, light tents and so on. More of a 'how to do it out of your own home' tutorial.

Thanx

Johan

I've been working on it lately.
A good macro lens, tri-pod, natural lighting, and remote got me these.
some have some exposure bracketing too.

...it's a pain.

one thing i saw someone use or was in a book or something...get a really big tupperware bowl and cut a hole in it for your lense and you can use that as a makeshift light "tent" the pictures looked really good just get a plain colored base to put it on and you're set....tupperware isn't always really cheap but i think you could find a reasonable deal or maybe even have one you don't use anymore... well that's all i can offer here :)

That is soe nice shots!

Intersting! And then I just place some whitish reading lamps around the tupperware bowl? One can allways compensate for oof-white light by means of PS or adjusting the camera colour balance.

Will it work well in sunlight?

I will try this.

Personally I think jewellery should be photographed on person - but in a way that the person do tot distract your attention.

The tupperware is a good idea. Basically, you're making a light tent out of it. If you need more contrast you can cover a part using black paper.
There are a few nice ('sponsored') 'how to' lessens over here:

I did shoot some jewelry on models a while back. Using Lumedyne flash + umbrella:

There was a link in the post titled "marbles and old......" http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=101777 that showed how to make a tent thingy for photographing small items.... it looks real easy to make and super inexpensive! :D

By the way....Rene, those B&W jewelry shots are gorgeous! :D

I'm interested in shooting jewelry also. I'm planning on building a cheap light tent but in the mean time I was playing with just bouncing my flash off the ceiling and off the wall. For a flash picture of jewelry I was surprised with the results...
