I am getting a sideline pass for a Big Ten Football game. This will be a trial by fire for me, having never shot a football game before. I'd appreciate any tips you can give me.

I am going to rent either a 300mm 2.8L or a 400mm 2.8L for the game. I am thinking of bringing my 1vHS for a second body to go with my 1D MKII. I"ll probably put the 400 on my ID & 70-200 2.8L on my Iv.

I have a monopod.

How much memory/film should I bring? Any suggestions? I'm too old and fat to run the sidline much.

if it is day game I usually shoot jpg and end up with 500-1000 shots, evening if I shot raw also about 500-700, so I care about 5-8gb. hope it helpful

I bring a 4 gig card plus 2 1 gigers for backup. 500-1000 sounds just about right too. I don't shoot raw, write is too slow and post processing too cumbersome. Meter for the players faces... ummm....if you are bringing a 300, bring a 1.4 tc too. You will only be able to shoot from outside the 25s and there is a big whole in the middle of the field, and you don't want to rely on ultra crops. The TC may degrade image ever so slightly, but supercropping will be worse. A buddy of mine plants himself at one end and shoots a 400 with a 2x, and is able to get full frame shots from the other end of the field straight on - which is hard to do when the are playing at say the 15. Also expect the refs to get in the way... there are way more at a division 1a game and they will find a way to muck up your shot. And don't be shy about your personal space. Between the other photo guys, video, officials, friends of players, etc, the sidelines get really crowded so be prepared to get cozy sometimes. And be prepared to retreat in a hurry if need be... and be prepared to have fun... it's a kick to be on the field at a big game. Have fun.

How much memory/film should I bring? How much can you stuff in the right-hand trouser pocket? :D (Put the exposed ones in the left) ;) Have fun!

I reserved the 400 2.8 L for the week end. $100.00 for a $6,700.00 lens seems fair. I looked into renting another 1D MKII but they want $150.00, go figure.

This might be the time for me to buy an Epson P2000 instead of spending another $200.00 for a 2 gig CF card. My wife & are planning on going to Alaska in June and I know I'll need the P2000 for sure.

Thanks for the tips I hope I don't get run over.

I'd offer my vast amounts of knowledge, but it applies to the Big 12.
(just kidding! good luck!)

Well.....The season has not gone as well as expected so far. Hopes were much higher this year....hopfully they will get it turned around real soon.

I was told last year by the studio that I work for that they would be able to get me down on the field for a Purdue game this year if I wanted. I hope to have time to do that in the next few weeks.

Have fun...and post some shots!

I have the 70-200 and most times it is too short. The 2.8 is a must as is the monopod.
