View Full Version : Motorsport Photography Workshop - Any interest?

I have had confirmation today that I can run three motorsport photography workshops at the start of next season at three of the top UK race circuits. I have planned these for the last few months and I hope that they may be useful for some of you.
The conditions are - no more than four people (plus me) at each and they will have to sign all the necessary disclaimers. I will be held responsible for those attending, so I am looking for people with commitment to make it a carreer, not as a one-off means to get to the other side of the wire. Oh, and you must be in good health from a safety point-of-view and reasonably fit to get around the circuits.
The meetings will be club events and you will be restricted on what you can do with any images taken. I have been offered an interesting prize for the best picture from the three meetings, but I'll leave you in suspense on that one.
The cost is Zero, Zip, Free, no money needed, just a decent camera and lens(es) suitable for the event. I am asking now rather than close to the events (March and April) so that I can assess if this is worth any further effort on my part.
I can't give details of the circuits, other than to say - the South, Midlands and North. The final details depend on meeting dates and venues and they will not be known until late February or early March.
If you are interested, please drop me a PM.

That's a great idea, Ken! I'm surprised that it's not fully subscribed by now... it's been up for an hour! ;)

If I was closer I'd be there in a New York minute.
But alas, I live on the wrong side of the pond.
Very sporting of you to offer this for free :D :D :D

I strongly urge any UK based wannabe motorsport photographers to take Ken up on this great offer. You will learn an awful lot.

I'd also love to have a go at that, but as Ken is after some people who are aiming to make a carreer out of it I'll not waste his time :)
You're right though, what a brilliant idea.

I'll second what Glenn has already said. I've had the privilege of shooting alongside Kenny a number of times this year and have always learnt something. It is an opportunity that should not be missed, and says a lot about Ken that he is prepared to do something like this.
Simon.

Great idea Kenny, I hope you get plenty of takers as we could all learn useful tips and techniques from yourself.
Alas photography and motorsport will never be more than my hobbies but for the younger folk looking at a career in mototsport photography this offer will be an excellent chance.

Would love to have a day with you Kenny G but my photography will only ever be a hobbie and i wont of saved enough for my 300 2.8 by next year which i now know i need after being fortunate enough to get trackside at Silverstone for a day.

A very generous use of your time Kenny... I'm certain you'll put together three excellent days. You'll have plenty of takers, that's for sure... but the lucky photographers will be in a strong position to further their photographic careers.
Hmmmm... maybe there's some potential for a Speedway Workshop at some point  OK... thought not! ;)

What a brilliant offer, I'd love to learn from the best, but I have a business to run that wouldn't appreciate me leaving to become a photographer, so I won't waste Kens time :)

Likewise - sounds like a great opportunity - my kit might just fit the bill but my career choice doesn't - shame. ;)

I'd love to do this, but photography is just a hobby. Maybe if the rest of us wannabees sat the other side of the fence and you spoke through a loudhailer?

I have had over 20 replies via PM and after this very busy weekend I'll go through them all and respond to everyone.
I had the idea for the workshops last year when I spent some time at Oulton Park, my side of the fence, with Glenn (Cadwell) at the Gold Cup. I knew there were people out there with talent, knowledge of the sport and a genuine drive to go a step further.
A difficult hurdle for most people is getting into the position where they can apply for accreditation, meeting the necessary criteria, and feel confident that not only can they get the coveted plastic pass, but also live up to expectations and deliver the goods. My aim is threefold - First to let you see what it is like working at a race circuit instead of spectating. Second to give you an insight on what goes on behind the scenes and just how close you can get to that side of the sport. Lastly to show you how to work at my side of the fence to get the best shots, be safe when doing it and how to develop your own style.
I can't cram 27 years into one day, but at the end of each workshop I hope those that do attend will have a good enough insight to allow them take the next steps if they want to. I had a mentor when I started, and his career went back to the 1950's. If he were alive today I am sure he would still be telling me to think of backgrounds, exposures and reading the action.

Kenny,
If I'd had to say what I'd hope for fromthe workshop, I couldn't have put it better. It's a real catch-22 (and not just in motorsport): to get the pictures you need the pass, but you can't get the pass til you show you can get the pictures. That, and listening to someone with your experience should make the workshop a winner. Many thanks for your efforts.

Hi Guys, A good few expressed interest when the post first appeared. Kenny recently said that he had run into problems with track insurance (I think) so I hope he still has my details on file.

I assume this is because he wanted to take people trackside.
I am sure we could still learn a lot even if we were not trackside

For those of you who think you are in the middle of nowhere, lookup Broken Hill NSW Australia, that's me and it is truely the middle of nowhere.
I would kill for an opportunity like this, if you ever want to come to Australia I will be the first person in line.

At the bottom of the middle of nowhere, I went and asked the organiser at Teretonga if I could go and shoot where the pro's shoot. She said yeah no problem, we'll get you a jacket, look at the restricted areas and enjoy.

The Isle of Man is known as "The Road Racing Capital of the World".
I am sure we would'nt have such insurance issues as the UK.
There is always something happening, whether on two or four wheels and it is such a great place to visit.

I could help with arrangements if Kenny is interested and willing to travel.
