....here are my spider webs. I went down to the canal purely to take pics of the webs as there was fog in the air and thats when spider webs look their best, but i planned ahead and took an old hair sprey bottle which gave me a very fine mist which i did use for these web pics.....'it's not cheating is it??'.....:D

P.S. it's the first time i've taken pics of webs so if there is a better method i'm all for ideas??

Cool shots. I have found that misting creates more uniform drops which probably does not look natural. I like your effect and every drop is in the focus. Well done.

......thanks, do what i've mentioned. I used a very fine sprey from an old hair sprey bottle thats used for my kids hair, the top unscrews and we refill it with water, all i did was hold it away from the web so it fell on it gengtly otherwise as one did getting too close destroyed it, (sorry spider). When i saw the effect i wanted i set my G6 on spot metre and adjusted the exposure and flash to make sure the background stayed dark and then adjusted in PSCS2......

Thanks all for kind comments, yes it was cheating a bit, but the idea in the first place was to go and see if the fog that was about would've made the webs wet, but i planned ahead and took a sprey just in case. I've never done webs before and plan to do more. I'd like see some web pics from other people.

...thanks once a again, i was being honest. It's certaintly food for thought though, try it yourself, at the end of the day it's the effect that we all try and capture.

Nice shots dude. And as my best friend always said, "There's no such thing as cheating. There's only getting caught.

....very true on the 'don't get caught', but when you think about it isn't using a filters in front of a lens 'cheating' too, and we all use them......;)

Indeed, webs seem to be so bloody hard to photograph :p I've found that one good angle is to get between the web and the sun in the morning or evening and get a shot of the reflections off the strands.... they end up being a nice golden color. I have some pics I need to scan of some webs taken that way.... will post when I get them.

Can't wait to see them and i will consider the sun next time but it will have to be vey still so i din't have to use the flash.

Your support is a welcome, it's only what artists do with paint we do it with cameras, i also lowerd the flash output and decreased the exposure for a good balance because the first couple were washed out, then there was no stopping me.....;) cheers.

Well, the background ended up being lighter than I had hoped for :p Was in a rush when I took them :( I am going to have to go back with the tripod ;) Of course...these are NOT macro... but it gives you an idea of the way the strands light up when lit from in front....

Mannytkd
11th of October 2005 (Tue), 14:47
I agree the background is light but you can really see what the sun has done here. In the past when i was still in the early stages of photography it was said that for webs the background has to be as dark as you can get it because of the delicacy of the strands so they can be seen, i think that fill flash does a great job of doing this for you but i would like to try and get a pic using the sun with some side-lighting for the effect but it has to done on a very still day...!!

Coooool shots, I think I'll use your technique as I don't go out early enoughto catch fog on the webs.

Great, lets see the results when you've done them but don't go too close with the sprey, you'll destroy the web also let the mist of sprey fall onto it as natural as you can, I.E. let it fall onto it gently, and becareful of the slightest breeze, flash will help eliminate the slightest movement. If anything, the more shelterd you are the better. Good luck..........:D

Thanks Marie, thats a very pleasent way of putting it. I made a comment on your poppies, and was hopeing you will consider creating a web-site for your splendid art work.

It would be interesting if you could create some art work with a web.....??

its when a painter/artist paints something that he knows is not 100% accurate but paints it anyway, just for the effect....

like painting a little 4 pane window highlight into somebodys eye.... we all know it shouldn't be there but it looks cool so we accept it............ or even my avatar.we all know my eye doesn't really glow like that but nobody questions it

sorry for the late reply to what you said

by the way, I never saw the other shots on this post when I was posting my last reply
never saw that there was a page two :eyes
they are very nice shots Guitarartists

re what you say about the 'paintings' type of shots
I have a lot of them on a gallery on my web site

and as you mention web's to be posted, here are a few of some I took over the years
not quite as beautiful and fancy as yours

I have more spider's web's taken years ago photographed with film
very very early in the morning out on the plains (webs. on furze bushes)
I must scan them in sometime and see how they look now
at the time I loved them.
they looked so wonderfully 'lacey'
it's marvellous what those spider's can do
:)

the first shot shown here was taken in a busy town
the web was between railings on a bridge overlooking a river
there were flowers floating on the river and that's what the blurry colours behind the web are
I was actually taking a photograph of the flowers on the river (looking down) when I saw the web
so I took shots of both the flowers and a close up of the web.

the last one here was taken with my first digital camera (casio) a few years ago.
it seems a bit large
I keep resizing it but something happens
I'll try again and repost it smaller later
sorry to anyone who has trouble
if so I will take it off

I call that shot 'the skier spider'

the second shot was taken by the garden shed
I call it my 'waterfall cobweb '

Hi Bruce
thanks a lot
that one was with flash
I stuck the zoom into a bush in the back garden
I bet the spider got a fright when he and his surroundings were suddenly 'all lit up'
:lol::shock:

I love the webs... always did
