hi
does anyone who has the aforementioned lens notice that at 17mm it will only focus as far as 1.5m on the lens barrel
at 2.8 this leaves far away things quite out of focus.
i took it back to the shop and tried another lens but it did the same.

Any lens witha wide aperture will leave things in the background out of focus if the focal point is close. If you need more depth of field, you should stop the lens down.

thanks, im aware of that
i was more concerned with the point that it wouldnt actually focus past the 1.5m mark when at 17mm (it does after about 24mm and upwards)
has anyone else noticed this?

What does "focus past" mean?

I think that this means the internal focusing ring of the lens will not physically rotate to a distance marked on the focusing scale of more than 1.5m distant from the film (sensor) plane.
If this is so then the lens(es) are faulty.
I didn't notice that on the example I tested - could be a bad batch the store have got?

yes indeed 'focus past' means that the lens will not focus further away from the film plane than 1.5 m.
does the same on my EOS 5
maybe its time to take it back

Let me tell ya, I had this lens and it plain sucks on a digital camera like the D60. It for some reason kept jamming up the camera it would frezz up and not do a thing until I removed the lens from the camera. Mind you this is the only lens that did that to my D60, as it was the only non-canon lens that I had. I sent it in to sigma for 6 times and it really never worked well. I sold it off and got the canon 17-35 F2.8 L that is a constant F2.8 from 17-35 the sigma is not. I think it is F 2.8 at 17MM. There is no savings in a sigma lens if you are a professional photographer. It took over 2 1/2 months of sending the lens back and forth to sigma for in to work half way well. I do not have time to play games or worry about my equipment breaking. Let me tell ya when something breaks in the heat of things you will miss the most important shot and I can’t afford it. Good luck and buy a canon lens it will play nice with all you future canon cameras.
