The wife and I were invited to demonstrate Lure Coursing (a dog sport) for a fund raiser that Twin Cities Dog magazine was doing last weekend. I photograph the dogs when ever we do this, and since I only have a total of 6gb of storage and this looked to be a busy day, I thought I'd look into some sort of storage that wasn't as expensive as Epson's P2000. I found the Jobo Giga2 on sale at Adorama for $139. With a 7in1 USB 2.0 interface, and 20gb, it looked ideal. I thought I'd share what I found.

The manual is a zerox copy and is pretty basic, but covers everything except for one important fact. They tell you to turn it on after inserting the memory card, and press the copy button. All I got was "ERR?". I finally reallized that the drive was not formatted! One long format later, and everything worked fine. That is, I started a copy, came back later, and everything was copied successfully. Little did I know how long that copy actually took to complete! The card is copied to a folder that is labeled according to the memory type ex. CF0001-CF9999, SD0001-SD9999 etc.

To make a long story short, a full 4gb CF card takes 12 min. to download on my USB 2.0 card reader, but 55min. to download onto the Jobo! 55 minutes! I found this out the hard way during the fundraiser when I had to quit twice to wait for a card to finish copying, and this was after I had al ready coincidentaly decided to download every 200 pictures or so. I finally gave up and switched to large jpeg in order to finish out the day. I took a total of 1400 pictures that day.

I just realized that I don't remember the download time from the Jobo to the PC. I'll do another trial if anyone is interested. Ok, so not a very scientific review, but I think the point is made. The drive is advertised as being upgradeable, so I wonder if the drive itself could be switched out to something faster... Looks like it uses a laptop hard drive.

I'm saving up my sheckles to buy the real thing now.
