Does anyone else want the S400 this bad??

I had stopped by FutureShop again after work to take another look at the S400 (I had looked at it that morning before work.) Then I left and began to bike home, when all of the sudden I stopped.
There standing not more than five feet away from me were two gorgeous Canadian Geese. One hissed at me but they did not fly off. They just went about their business as if I was not even there.

I stood there marvelling at their beuty and the fact that I was this close to them, all the while cursing and kicking myself because I did not have a camera that was compact enough to take with me. Thus is the Curse of spending all my money on the G3.

I can't wait till I save enough money!

To be 100% honest, I'd have to say no... in the month it's been available here in Australia, I've had one enquiry for an S400, or Ixus 400 as it's called here... I've sold a stack of A70's, a few A60's, several G3's and one S45, one S50... and the enquirer for the 400 took a G3 as he was really after more of a serious camera than an ultra compact...

I take my G2 everywhere, literally... and it's in a reasonably sized bag, along with it's LADC58 and a 420EX permanently attached, two polarisers, an ND filter and a hoya closeup set, lenspen, spare battery and the tv lead, plus half a dozen CF cards... it's not THAT big if you've ever lived with an SLR... and by not taking it you miss shots, just like you did then...

I have a G2 which I too thought was kind of big with the lens adaptor on etc. My friend just bought a Powershot S50 and at first I thought it was so small and thus would be just perfect for me. But after trying to program the time, date etc I found the arrow controls really hard to use. Yes it is small (like the 400) but at the end of the day, it's more frustrating to use. Besides, having the ability to add different lenses and the fact that the LCD screen can tilt to any angle, is such a huge plus G3.

Yikes, it's a shame to miss a shot like that. I have 3 Elphs, 2 S230's and a new S400. I have no trouble using them, and they can be carried around in your pocket so easily you never even know they are there. I think the optics and features are amazing for a camera that size. I have a friend with a G3 hat sits on his desk most of the time. I can't imagine
having any use for a camera that size unless you are more than a casual point and shoot kind of person.

I agree with Russell. I "upgraded" from my S30 since the S400 is smaller. I'm just looking for a good case and I plan to take it with me much more often now. I'm sure there are great uses for large camera's, but people WILL think your a freak if you take one with you everywhere. A small camera can look like a pager or something and people wont even care or notice it.

Well Canon doesn't make pager sized camera... yet. The S400 is more the size of an MP3 player or something I'd say.

Do you have a Lowes Home Improvement Center near you? If so, hot foot it over there and pick up a cell phone case that says GE/Sanyo on the bottom in red. There are two sizes. Get the small one. It says "small leather case" on the front, and the model number is 47439. It is black leather, costs about $10.00. and fits the Elphs PERFECTLY. It is very snug, and you can even slip an extra battery in the bottom if you lay it flat. These cases are becoming hard to find. They used to carry them at Walmart, but changed the model so the new ones have the charger slit in the bottom, and are a little too small.

Did you find that case? I'm a freak about containers. I have bags for my bags, so there was a lot of research that went into finding the right one. :-)

GE/Sanyo. Got it. I'm gonna check one of those out too. I won't get my S400 though for another few weeks.

Well, if I hadn't just bought one recently, I'd feel that way, yes.

One of my favorite shots I almost didn't get because I was not even going to walk down from my office where they were grazing (in their job as grass controllers to prevent fires).

But my S400 is easily lost in the small pouch I carry in place of a purse and it is always ready in case.

If you click on the photo, it'll bring up the original large-sized 2272x1704 version carrying the EXIF data and not processed, so the larger one is only what the camera took.

To me, the S45/S50 form factor/capabilities are just the right combination. You can easily carry it in a pocket (but of course not a small one :), and you can have all the G3/G5 modes. The S400 is too limiting to me, because I'm used to the EOS "way" to take pictures, so I prefer to choose the aperture/shutter combination by myself. Of course the S400 is far more pocketable, but I'm carrying the S50 in my coat pocket everyday, without inconvenients.
