Yes indeed, 50 1.4 looks the sharpest of the three. That's not unexpected, right ? In fact, I believe that even if you used a $70 50 1.8 in the comparative test it would yield sharper images than the zooms.
Also, not unexpectedly to me, I can not see any significant image differences between 28-135 and 24-70.

Thanks Petkal, Being a dad with a lot more budget I went to the 24-70. I borrow the 50 1.4 and 28-135 from my daughter to do this test and I was a little disappointed with 24-70 2.8L.

I'd put the 50mm in front by a clear margin because the image looks like the object. I too think the 50mm 1.8 would perform similarly, at least closer than the other two. The 24-70 L I put next and it is pretty good, but still looks like a photo. The 28-135 IS I know pretty well and image looks like I remember it is capable of producing. Decent enough but you can get better for less.

The background blur is better with the 50

The 50 is a prime, so it should win this. Heck, its a prime that's just missing the L label. So is the 85 1.8, but that's because of the 1.2.
I can understand a comparision between the 24-70 and 28-135, but not with the 50.

Tin Man, thanx for sharing that comparison test.
Incidentally, to my dilettante eye that is a charming photo object as well as masterfully (and simply) done photo.
(I'd trade that 24-70 for your daughter's 50 1.4 :D )
