I don't own an EOS-1DS just yet... about six weeks away I hope. But there's no harm in planning for the future...

In reading the documentation available on the web, I can't work out whether the Canon EOS-1Ds has a "preset" facility - the custom and personalised mechanisms don't seem to be what I'm after.

Here's what I mean by "preset". In the film world I have 4 major camera setups. Lets call them StageA, StageB, Studio and Candid. Each of these setups has a different combination of Film, Autofocus setting, Metering Method and so on to suit the environment and subject matter. So, in the digital world I would have ISO setting, Autofocus and Metering etc...

So my question is: Does the Canon EOS-1Ds have the ability to remember a bunch of settings, say four different setups and then recall them fairly simply? So recalling the setup for "StageA" would set the ISO, Autofocus mode, Metering mode as required for the "StageA" environment. Recalling "Studio" would have a different bunch of settings.

Roy, I have a 1Ds, have been so busy shooting with it I must confess that I have not read any of the manual for things that I don't need to know about. Right now the manual is in the other half's car.

However, reading through the Software Manual which I do have here with me it mentions the available paramater settings, which from using the camera and going through all menus I cannot see any other way of storing 'settings' as far as those sorts of things go.

All you can do with the paramaters is the choose the standard settings or select one of three sets of personalised parameters.

The parameters contain adjustments for -

JPEG Quality Scale of 6 - 10 for Hi Qual.
Scale of 1 - 5 for Lo Qual.
Pattern Sharpness - Fine, MidFine, Std, MidRough, Rough
Sharpness - Scale of 0 - 5
Tone Curve

In RAW mode only the latter two are applied.

I cannot see any way of setting the ISO and so on you refer to via a paramater or personal/custom function either.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear. When the car and the manual return I'll check that as well. If I do find something I'll be sure to post the info.

Thanks Stephen. No biggy - it was just one of those things that I'd like to have. It won't change my decision on the camera! I'll just have to reset some expectations...

If you find out for sure, I'd still like to know. Thanks!

Roy, no prob.

Have the manual here with me now.

Sorry but, you know what's coming.... cannot see anywhere in the manual where they mention such an option as you seek. Never mind, we can't be completely happy can we?

It would never put me off buying this camera. I use it for sports photography, I know what a lot of people may be thinking right now. But, if you can set yourself up for the shots you want, it can handle the job no problem - depending on what you want. But it works for me.

I fired off a 5 shot sequence of Karl Muggeridge crashing at Phillip Island in the World Supersport practice session back around end of March. No problem, I have five fantastic photos of Karl's misfortune. OK, I could have maybe had 10 with a 1D, but so what? Five is enough for me :-)

For what I'm using it for, the way I use it, I would not trade it for anything.

The camera is simply, in a word, awesome. Color is so true with the 400 f2.8 and 70-200 f2,8 just brilliant.

Did I mention I like it? :-)

Good luck with the purchase,

Stephen

Thanks again for taking the trouble to check this out for me, Stephen. And I'm happy to hear your very positive comments about the camera. You've confirmed for me that this is the right decision.
