Leo, I need some commentary/explanation about all these images. Surely the girl in the last image, with all the jewelry, nose ring and related piercings, tattoos and education isn't begging!

thats why NYC is the greatest city in the world!
Even the "better off" can beg!
(Maybe shes down on her luck...or needs another rock!)

Geez, I was born in Manhattan and nobody ever suggested that if things went rotten for me that there was any alternative to pressing forward, looking for work and being self reliant. I am a bleeding heart liberal but this woman needs to do her reading in Starbucks like the rest of us! If she doesn't have the time to eyeball the potential customers to add a little guilt to the game then she should probably starve anyway!

How's she getting a good salry with that "I'm a junkie" look?
No doubt reading a critique on the latest panelling/steretyping/profiling used by HR depts.... and picky people like me!

Sorry guys, maybe I should have written some descriptions for each pic.
#1 - Taken in front of the public liabrary between 5th Ave. and 42nd St. If you saw the movie "Ghost Buster", you should know what it looks like inside the library. I felt that the distribution of these people sitting there was quite interesting.
#2 - Portrait of a Horse. Taken on 5th Ave. outside of Central Park.
#3 - Traffic Cop - Taken in Time Square.
#4 - Bronze Statue - I added some grain to this pic because I wanted to acheive a vintage look.
#5 - Chinese Musician - Taken in China Town. This Chinese man is a fortune teller. He was playing a traditional Chinese instrument while waiting for customers.
#6 - Begger - Surely she doesn't look like one, but she's begging for foods. She's a homeless. All of her belongings was in the cart on her right. It's surely strange for non-New Yorkers, but I probably see one of these young people begging on the street at least once a week.
Thanks for looking :)

If only all the liberals shared your viewpoint . . .
Instead of wondering why the government hasn't helped this poor unfortunate person who has been so wrongly left behind and discriminated against because of her appearance . . .
The world would be a better place.

I recently saw a homeless man sleeping in a doorway on a rainy day.
He had his cell phone right nearby.

Some choose to be homeless not because they have no choice, but because they choose to.

Thanks Andrew! Yes, I added some grain to the b&w statue. I like how the noise added some vintage feel to the shot.

Leo, yes, I know about some choosing to be homeless, but all who do it choose to beg! I have great empathy for the mentally ill (having taken some Prozac in my time) who we in California have chosen not to accommodate anymore, but the able bodied who make such a choice do so at the expense of the truly incapable. Well, I don't want to do politics ... your image clearly is powerful and well seen.

My first post! Yay! Well i just got a Cannon Powershot A40, and im heading to new york myself in january ( 13 Weeks Time ) and firstly i really lke your pictures, the B&W pic of the horse is brilliant, id love it as my desktop pic! As you took such brilliant pictures, i was wondering if i could ask your advice, i am going to New York with my sister and Mother, and my 2 Year old nephew. What are the best places for pictures? I know the usual touristy places, but did you find any hidden places that are good for taking scenic/Urban pics?
Any suggestions welcomed.

Great pics Leo! Is that bronze statue just north of Grand Central, on Park Avenue? Also, I have been seeing more and more young homeless persons on the streets nowadays. Most of them are just north of Union Square, oddly enough within a stone's throw off the Barnes and Noble branch over there.

Dwight - I am with you on this one. That's why I would never give money to these people. My heart will, however, goes out to those who are mentally ill, and would try to help them to the extent I can (i.e., give them food). Unfortunately, there are many of these illness here around us, and they are just wondering on the street without sufficient helps. :(

Flix - Welcom to the forum and thanks for your nice comments. There are a lot of places in NYC where you can take pictures. SoHo and Village are good for street photography. Architectual photography can be easily taken in mid-town of mahattan. Brooklyn Bridge is one of my favorites too. Also don't forget to take some pics of the skyline of NYC, which can be done in either Long Island City (in Queens County) or the other side of Hudson (i.e., NJ). Hope you will enjoy your trip :)

Hi, BB. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, the bronze statue is on Park Ave., so you know the area well :)
