Fresno holds the largest re-enactment of the Civil War in the country...it is quite the show. We spent the afternoon enjoying the Battle, the people and the costumes. Here are a few to share....

I didn't know that. I'll have to head up and catch that sometime... Nice collection of pictures here. BTW, I saw Abe this year, too:

Great work, Maureen. Shooting people in costume is my favorite kind of photography.

Large-brimmed hats + sunshine = brutal shadows. Was fill-flash part of your strategy?

I was definitely not in a good place to avoid the hat shadows and I haven't spent any time photoshopping them away, LOL. Basically cropped and posted, all taken with my 135mm.

Lonnie, the event is usually held the first part of Oct. every year. We think there is a WWII event coming up this spring at Eagle's Landing...will find out more and let you know.

Oh boy! the infamous civil war battle I've read so much about. "The Battle of Fresno".   Wonderful shots Maureen. I really would have loved to be there. I've got to get myself to some of the reenactments we have around here. I can't believe how much Abe looks like his paintings. :D :D

Great shots, Maureen. The only re-enactments I've seen were in places the war was actually fought. I can't imagine why Fresno would do this, but I'm pleased they do.

Wonderful images, Maureen :D

Is that venue organized in a way?
Otherwise, I think that there might be more than one Abe running around ... might be fun to get more of them together in a picture, together with the Grants and the Lees

Best regards,
Andy

Love the shot of 'Abe' and the second shot is very good too with the old style muttonchops on the man.

I only saw the one, Andy. It was a huge event and thousands of people there. It is put on by the Fresno Historical Society and most of the participants are repeat performers each year. I am still talking about it to everyone as it was very impressive. I still have a couple hundred photos I need to wade through but the costumes and battles were awesome.

Awwwww.
the man that plays Abe is doing a good job. I've never met the original one, but i'd imagine that's what he'd look like. har har.

Really interesting subjects well photographed. I bet that guy who looks like Abe stops the show at all the re-enactments he attends! I'd love to see more shots from events like this one. :-)
