The Canon 70-200mm f4L is optically rated just as highly as the f2.8L version. You'll lose a stop or so but lenses are alway sharper when stopped down a few stops from wide open. If you are going to use a tripod and you'll never see a difference in quality and you'll save quite a few bucks by going with the f4 version. As a matter of coincidence, canon has a rebate going on those two lenses right now. http://www.usa.canon.com/html/rebates/camerapromo/index.html

I think both Canon lenses are great, you'll probably be happy with either one.

Good luck to you.

I have directly compared the canon 70-200L f4 and sigma 70-200 f2.8 ex hsm. The Canon is superior in all respects except that it can't go to 2.8 and does not come with a tripod ring.

I have the Canon 70-200 f4.
A good lens for semi-professionals...

But i miss f2,8 by concert- and sport-photographie...

----------

So I bought last week the sigma 120-300 f2,8
(2,500 Euro). Very good, but also very heavy...

If your`re interested: I`m selling my Canon 70-200 f4 ....
