Anyone have experience with the vivitar 850AF with a 10D (or any other D camera d30/d60)? I am looking for an external flash and could sure use some help.

Thanks,

The 10D requires that a flash have E-TTL to work with it in any mode other than manual. The 850AF doen't appear to have E-TTL which means it'll work as a manual flash but you'll have to make all the settings by hand. If you are looking for a cheap manual flash then it'll work. If, However, you want full automation then you need a flash with E-TTL.

I hope that helps you in your decision.

Good luck to you.

Check out the Sigma EF 500 DG Super or the EF 500 DG ST. Sigma's offerings can be seen here (http://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/flashes.htm). So far mine works well with the 10D. I have yet to test it with my Elan 7e.

If you want it to be as automated as the 10D itself,. I think you need to stick with Canon.

I have an Olympus FL40 ETTL flash that rtails for $450.00,.. it is amazing when attached to an olympus Digital, but it is next to useless when attached to the 10D. (it can be used as a manual of course,. but the 10D and FL-40 will not talk to eachother)

Perhaps the Sigma is better at working with other manufacturers,.. but I'd be carefull.

I've had a Sigma EF-500 Super (http://adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=details&sid=1051898694103345298&sku=SG500EOS) for over a year.. Works great in E-TTL mode both with my D30 and now my 10D.

Build quality is lacking when compared to the Canon 550EX, and it doesn't work with the EX-series slave/master remote modes, but it functions well for the price!

It looks like they now offer a "DG" (http://adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=details&sid=1051898694103345298&sku=SG500EOSDG) model which has more power output... fwiw.
