Some of the railroad photo sites are notoriously snobbish and cliquish. If it was one of those, I'm not particularly surprised. It's a very good shot.

It appears to be a nice shot of one as well. :D

That's a beautiful old locomotive and well shot, that other site is full of hot air, no steam at all!

do not listen to crap-heads the steam and smoke are great if there is more smoke to the image try a portriate crop of just the engine and a higher plume of smoke

I agree with the idea of cropping. There is something about the people that is a little distracting to me, and I had to get really picky to come up with that. It's a nice shot in my book.

If you crop at all, I wouldn't do it too heavily --- maybe make the right edge about halfway through the first car. Any more than that would look wrong.
As to having people in the picture, they belong there. The East Broad Top is a tourist railroad, and people ride on benches on those open flatcars. There's no sense trying to make it into something it isn't.
The smoke and steam are crucial elements in any steam engine photo as far as I'm concerned. The more, the better.

Ok, silly me. Living in Central Florida made me think that only Disney did that. ;)
I know very little about trains, and if that's the way it's supposed to be then I say it's an excellent shot. Your point is well take Belmondo.
I wasn't suggesting cropping as a way of making it something it isn't. I was merely thinking of changing the focus of the shot, and putting more emphasis on the smoke, which looks really cool. I feel that cropping should normally be done through the viewfinder, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way, and I don't consider cropping to be such a terrible thing.
