Canon Digicam EOS 10D has focus problems

After a message of the French industry service "Chasseur of d'Images" Canon EOS 10D of focus problems arise with a part recently of the again introduced digital mirror reflex cameras of the type. Probably due to a tuning problem of the sharpness levels of the AF sensors and the CMOS Bildaufnehmers the devices concerned put the sharpness not precisely on the sensor level, but scarcely before it or behind it. With "similar" cameras such deviations are hardly noticeable according to statement of the manufacturer, since their system including the never completely flat fitting photo film is subjected to generally larger tolerances. The sensors of digital cameras demanded however higher precision, and also the wide representation on the computer monitor promotes a discovering of Unschaerfeproblemen.

According to Canon Germany is at present only a "parts per thousand range" the delivered 10D-Bodys concerned. Remarkably become the effect because of the sinking sharpness depth only with screen opened far and usually only in combination with individual objectives, where the respective adjustment tolerances made themselves unfavorably added and the effect visible.

Canon recommends EOS-10D-Kaeufern, which the suspicion on a Unschaerfeproblem has with its camera, with good lighting and open objective screen a flat surface, e.g. a magazine side attached to the wall to make a blueprint with autofocus focusing and to accomplish a comparison admission with manual focusing. If with parallel view of both pictures on the computer monitor then a clear sharpness waste points itself to sides of the AF admission, Canon offers a free examination to the camera and the optics by the central customer service. For this the camera can be sent in together with all objectives potenziell concerned to the CAN on service center, Siemens ring 90-92, in 47877 Willich. The Telefonhotline has the call number 01805/006022, costs 12 cent per minute and is on Mondays to Thursday between 8 and 17 o'clock and freitags to 14 o'clock attainable.

In the event of an error the manufacturer wants to make a readjustment of the camera and/or or the objectives. Foreign objectives are examined likewise free of charge in combination with the EOS Body, a necessary adjustment must take place then however via the respective objective manufacturer. Statements about it, how many or which equipment loads of the EOS-10D-Reihe potenziell by the focus problem are affected, were not of Canon before the May holiday any more to get.

Focus and/or sharpness problems with the digital EOS cameras was complained last with some loads of the 3-Megapixel-Modells EOS D30. The successor EOS D60 remained however inconspicuous. In the current EOS 10D Canon a new 7-Feld-Autofokussystem begins, which is taken to the "similar" series Eos-30 and 300V. ( klp /c't)

Hi there,

There seem to be 2 problems with
the first batch 10D's, serial 023xx which are
solved on the later nr 04xx serial batches:

- variation of body thickness resulting in
front- or back focus

- mis-alligned CMOS - no final sharpness

It can also be a combination of those
two. My 10D body has a 023xx serial and
isn't as far as sharp as my D60 with which I
shot over 30,000 picts with with top L
lenses. Some 10D bodies already have been
swapped because of CMOS mis-allignment.

Also: (this may sound arrogant). Users
new to digital bodies with inferior glass
may not even now how sharp the D60 and
10D can be .... A good picture doens't need USM.
The D60 and 10D are very sensitive to good
glass !

Dog: Here a sample made with the D60,
unaltered, 33% of orginal size.
