Has anyone got this lens already? I'd love to see some pictures, thinking about getting this lens for low light/shallow DOF work.
Thanks

Got this lens a week ago. So far, so good. Sharpness is equal to the 35L 's i've used in the past, build quality is even better than the 35L and manual focusing feels silky smooth.

Hmm maybe even on my 20d the manual focus wont matter as im not going to be shooting sports. 35mm at f9 should be quite hard to miss

Thanks everyone. I don't have a special focusing screen although i really should get one. As funny as it sounds, i've been shooting 85% of my portraits using live view. It actually feels quite natural to me now :-) I also might use Magic Lantern AJ firmware on my 5D2 because it has a focus peek feature that brings up a magnified view when i turn my manual focusing ring and makes it dissapear after i stop turning :-)
It really is a great lens and i higly recommend it to everyone.

People took photos for 100 years before autofocus was invented. Somehow, they even got some in focus!
Serious answer: manual focus is easy with a precision focusing screen and a bit of practice.
This new Samyang looks like a great performer.

How does this compare to the Sigma 30mm?
That's basically the question we've all been waiting for right? I have anyway. About the same FL (not enough difference for most to ONLY consider one or the other I think...?) but the Sigma is cheaper and has AF!
As far as I can tell by some of the test shots this is on a different level, but the Sigma isn't an underdog itself!

I'm kinda thinking of getting that stupid screen, so I can learn to use the manual focus much better on the mark II

Nope, stock screen. I used to have one of those precision screens on my old 5D, but it really didn't seem worth the hassle to get one for the Mark II. It helps, but not as much as one would hope.
I use live view to shoot at large apertures.

Is the manual focus ring smooth? How's the build quality? How's the image quality compare to your Zeiss lenses? I'm going to go on a leg and say that Samyang 35mm f1.4 vs Zeiss 35mm f1.4 will be like the Sigma 85 f1.4 vs the Canon 85mm f1.2.
Mast3rChi3f
6th of June 2011 (Mon), 18:12
The build construction is not even close from the Zeiss, but it is very good in my opinion, (metal and some plastic). The ring is very smooth, easy to focus, but doesn't focus on infinity.
The samyang doesn't have the micro-contrast and rendering of Zeiss, but is sharp and the color reproduction is neutral, witch is good for portrait.

For the same price, you can get the sigma 30 1.4 which has AF.
This supposedly has superior image quality to the Sigma 30.

Really? I think the Sigma trumps the samyang wide open in the centre, but the samyang is better at the corners due to it being a FF lens.
To each his own, if you need the corner sharpness and are willing to lose AF for this, then get the Samyang. If AF is absolutely critical, get the Sigma, that's why im gonna get the sigma soon, wish i could get the 35L

Just got mine today! Man, I suck at manually focusing at 1.4, but who doesn't right? I'm going to pick up an Ee-s focusing screen tomorrow. Hopefully it will help.
Both wide open.

curious to know about this too. Im guessing the canon is slightly sharper but the rendering of the lenses in terms of contrast and bokeh is almost the same. If you dont need AF the samyang is more worth it for 1/3rd the price

You should really look into a focus screen. A regular canon one is just over $40. It would make a big difference, I think.

If it's the aperture and focal length you're looking for, I'd say definitely use it for video. I can't wait to borrow another 5D2 to try this lens out on its video.

Yes, but if you shoot with lenses slower than 2.8 it can darken the viewfinder. The "catseye" focus circle darkens up in low light, and can mess up your metering if you use "spot"...I think. Actually, I don't have one but have been researching them recently. I believe that's the deal, however.

Samyang/rokinon/bower never put af chips on their lenses and it was only earlier this year they made one for nikon 85mm f1.4
You could add your own chip but you risk it being some Chinese garbage and not working very well.

Finally have both the 35L and the Samyang in my hands at the same time. I'm in the process of moving, so I haven't had much time to do a thorough comparison, but here are my preliminary thoughts.
I'm very impressed with the Samyang. Wide open, it's surprisingly sharper in the center than the L to me. The build of the L is obviously better, but the focus ring on the Samyang is very nice, smooth and long, making it easy to dial in the focus, especially with my precision screen. Contrast is very good, colors look great as well. The Samyang is longer, however, probably closer to 38-40mm. Overall, I'm really quite impressed with it.
I'll start a thread with a more thorough comparison with sample shots from each when I get the chance. I'll likely keep the L just because of the build quality and the AF. If you can deal with the MF, though, I think the Samyang is an awesome alternative to the L, especially at less than half the cost.

It varies with camera body. I just ordered the ee-s, but that is for the 5D. A lot of folks buy the much more expensive cats-eye and haoda, which (I think) are cannibalized from old film cameras and have things like the "split-focusing" circle in the middle of the screen like pre-digital cameras had (which is really cool, IMHO), but they have problems with slow lenses, when used in poor light, and can throw off single point metering...
