Found this little guy this morning, he was even kind enough to wait while I got the camera.

Kit lens, 12+20mm tubes, built-in flash + diffuser

V-Good.

I could not get that sort of quality out of my kit lens, which leads me to believe the kit lens manufacturing process is inconsistent.

Great shot - just shows that the kit lens is better than most people realise.

the kit lens on extension tubes makes an awesome macro setup........ (it was my tool of choice for a LONG time)

great shot of this smelly dung fly pxl8 :)

Another great fly shot. I can't get a fly shot to save my life, even though there's 20 million subjects around here.

Amazing shot with the kit lens- Suspect it's a dung fly similar to the one I posted recently.
One query, I thought the Kenco tubes were not supposed to work with EF-S lenses?- The Jessops brand ones I have do work with EF-S.

Thanks all, to answer some questions:

Working distance is a matter of inches so finding a subject that is happy for you to get close is important.

The kenko tubes don't take EF-S mount by default, they do if you're willing to hack the central section of plastic away with a sharp knife. I know some other people have machined theirs for a more professional finish. Mine's a little more rough and ready but does the job all the same.

pxl8, care to share a pic of where it was modified? I rarely use my kit lens and i use the 70-200mm f4 with the tubes which is a great combo. But i'm interested to know how you did it.

The attached shows my hacked 12mm tube. I've marked the edge I trimmed away. I just kept trimming and testing the fit until the lens would mount.

Brian you probably have the same set of jessops extensions i have..... at the time i bought them i didn't even take into consideration that the kit lens would fit i just asked the guy in the shop for a set of macro tubes for a 350D..... he gave me the ones that fit the kit lens :) (nice chap that he was)

You got a very nice result with your kit lens.
The picture is amazingly sharp.

i think the kit lens just works better with extension tubes or filters. i kno that when i use diopter filters on my kit, its massively sharper than using full zoom a few inches farther back.

so those that think the kit lens production is inconsistant- try it again
